Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Garrett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a native Californian born and raised in sunny Southern California. Around 8th grade, I moved to Charleston, South Carolina and lived there through high school. It was traumatic and a huge culture shock, but it was during some formative years so I have many memories of my time there.
I’ve always been creative and I was encouraged by having a creative family. My mother is always inspiring me by her ability to problem solve with creative solutions. My brother was a great illustrator and pushed me to learn how to be as talented as him.
Since my first graphic design course in high school, I was hooked. I decided to study advertising at a private college in Florida which had an amazing program to study at FIDM NY, however, I never got to join the program. It was during a trip to New York City that I attended a Women in Advertising summit and realized I might be in the wrong major. I was studying advertising but all the inspirational men and women in advertising said they were artists and studied art not business. Once I really felt the competitiveness of the industry, I decided to move back to South Carolina where I attended the University of South Carolina to study graphic design and art.
Again, I realized I wanted to be where the action was and so I moved back to Los Angeles. I graduated from California State University, Long Beach and all I could think about was how I wanted to start working! I’ve had some dream jobs and not so dream jobs, but what I learned ultimately was that I wanted to be my own boss.
I started my first business at the age of 26 in a studio apartment in Long Beach. That business focused on wedding and event invitations and I eventually opened a shared retail space in Long Beach with three others in the wedding industry. After five years, I closed the doors to that business and took on a new path.
I scored a job as an Art Director for a local magazine in Orange County called OC Family and I loved it, most of the time. But I knew I wanted to do my own thing again and so Margaux Agency was born.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, at all! I think that is one of the thrills of being a business owner, honestly. You will fail but you must learn from those failures. I don’t regret anything I have done with growing my businesses. I’m always learning from myself and others but you have to know when to step away from all the noise.
There is a plethora of information out there, it is easy to get overwhelmed and lose track of your goal. Now, I love offering consulting services to other business owners. Helping them avoid the same mistakes.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Margaux Agency – what should we know?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
When my company wins, I am so proud. We have an amazing team that I am so proud of. The team is composed of several smart and strong women (and one man!) and they represent our brand beautifully. Having the right talent is key in scaling a company and I am so proud of our team.
They make our clients shine and even our own brand. Knowing they enjoy the work and have a passion for what they do makes me a happy CEO. Having the ability to bring on employees has been a great milestone for the company and we only look forward to growing more.
