Today we’d like to introduce you to Manny.
Hi Manny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My Journey: From Coal to Diamond
I came to this country in search of a better future. From the start, it was made clear that success would come through school and relentless hard work. But as I grew older, I realized that I was constantly playing catch-up—and to succeed, I had to work twice as hard and find ways to stand out.
The work ethic I developed didn’t guarantee me anything overnight. But it opened doors—the right ones—that ultimately brought me to where I am today.
While my family always emphasized the importance of education, they were often skeptical about my ambitions outside of the traditional path. That doubt could’ve crushed me—but instead, it taught me one of life’s most valuable lessons: to surround myself with people who believe in me and help bring out my potential.
There’s a quote by Malcolm Forbes that I’ve carried with me: “Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their jobs.” That stuck with me. I decided to keep going, even when things were tough, because I believed—like a diamond—I had potential.
Diamonds are formed under extreme heat and pressure, and I’ve felt those forces in my life. I didn’t grow up with luxury or cushion. Many people I know had the support of two parents, didn’t have to worry about rent, or had a built-in safety net. I didn’t have that. But I had heart. And through it all, I’ve learned that even pain can be a teacher.
Losing my brother Chris was a reminder that life is fragile. It’s why I always encourage people to tell their friends and family they love them—you never know how much time you have. That loss, along with other lessons from my family, helped me commit to a path fueled by positivity, growth, and gratitude. No matter what life threw at me, I promised myself I would choose optimism.
I’ve come to understand that success isn’t about fancy cars or degrees from elite schools. Diamonds aren’t defined by wealth—they’re defined by pressure, by resilience, by the decision to keep going. I’ve had to polish myself through every challenge, setback, and hard-earned win.
Today, I’m proud to own Apollo Gym in Glendale, where I help others do the same—discover their strength, build their confidence, and realize their own potential. Helping people uncover the diamond within themselves is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.
If you’re reading this and facing your own pressure, I hope this reminds you: you’re not alone. Stay the course. Stick to your purpose. And don’t forget—diamonds are just chunks of coal that never gave up.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I had to navigate a lot on my own—language barriers, financial pressure, and the constant need to prove myself. I lost loved ones, worked multiple jobs, and faced a lot of self-doubt along the way. But every struggle taught me something. The pressure made me stronger, more focused, and more grateful for the journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of Apollogym. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own Apollo Gym in Glendale, where we focus on personalized, efficient, and intentional training. We specialize in one-on-one personal training and also offer group fitness sessions—but everything we do is tailored to the individual. No cookie-cutter programs here.
What sets us apart is our focus on creating programs that balance both what you want and what you need—whether that’s improving your health, movement, or how you feel in your body. We believe real progress happens when your training reflects your goals and your lifestyle, not just generic routines.
At Apollo, it’s not just about fitness—it’s about transformation and real connection.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was curious, competitive, and always drawn to movement. I had a real passion for sports and fitness from an early age. I wasn’t the loudest in the room, but I was always focused and worked hard behind the scenes. That quiet hustle shaped who I am today.
