Meet Mandi Moss of Ghost Light Photobooth and Photography in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandi Moss.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mandi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My husband Michael and I got married in 2012 and we had a photo booth at our wedding as part of our photography package. The pictures were stunning and lots of people even blew them up for prints. It was so much fun. And a couple years later as I was getting more into digital photography, I was a film photographer for many years before my camera died and I using film wasn’t practical anymore, and I started thinking about the idea of starting this as a business. I got some advice from a successful photographer friend on studio setups since that was all new to me and started learning and getting equipment and getting to use some long dormant photo editing skills. It was nice because even though my husband isn’t a photographer, I’ve been able to show him how to set things up with me and we work together and have a great time with the guests. Now as we’re growing we’re learning better ways of doing business and able to really adapt to differing situations, but at the end of the day, we love contributing to the fun and we love giving people stunning photos that they can keep for a long time and not just throw in a drawer and forget about.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A LOT of our first parties were very stressful as we got our setup process down. We were both very nervous and tense and trying to be calm lol. We’ve also encountered some mystery technical issues that we (luckily) were able to mysteriously resolve! But those were pretty scary, because if the lights won’t work, the pictures won’t come out! We’re always learning and ready to start expanding into immediate emailing from the event which I’m sure will be hectic our first few times as well!

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ghost Light Photobooth and Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
We provide an open-air photo booth in a studio setup. We can have it be self-running, where the guests take their own pictures with a remote trigger, or I can snap the shutter for people. We provide props and fun backdrops and after the event I hand edit all the photos and they’re all provided for free download or for print for a small fee. Most services provide images that aren’t lit well and are poor quality, it’s very important to us that you have an image worthy of sharing proudly on social media or even framing on your wall. I’m also very happy to say that the two of us are lovely to have at your event and really do want your guests to have a good time and feel special. It’s not just a gig to us, it really matters that fun is had and good pictures are taken.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think that luck is something arbitrary, I think that we position ourselves in places where we’re available for things to happen and we take the good chances we can get and find what we can learn from the bad ones and move and improve.
