Meet malibu mylk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Fuisz and Nicole Gertner Bronfman

Brittany was always a big fan of flax seed and incorporating into her diet wherever possible… A sprinkle on avocado or a bit in some oatmeal. A good friend of hers was struggling to find milk for her one-year-old baby, who is allergic to nuts and dairy. Brittany thought, why not make a mylk from flax?

A Cordon Bleu grad, Brittany took to her blender and discovered that flax mylk not only tastes incredible but is loaded with fiber, omega’s and nutrients that are good for the body and for mother earth. Brittany met Nicole through a mutual friend at a dinner a few weeks after starting to play with recipes.

Brittany explained her idea, and it really resonated with Nicole, who had dealt with a severe autoimmune disorder in her family. She had found that clean eating eliminated all the symptoms and loved that Brittany was working on an allergen-free mylk. The two connected again shortly thereafter, and malibu mylk was formed.

They’ve developed two flavors: an original for everyday needs that works as the ideal dairy replacement and an unsweetened for those on any special diets or who want no sugar. Both work great in  baking, cereal, smoothies, coffee and more.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think a smooth road exists when starting a business! Finding a co-packer was been the biggest hurdle. Our manufacturing date was pushed back more than half a dozen times and many, many weeks. In some ways, this ended up working for our advantage, but it was still incredibly frustrating at the time. There are moments where we feel like the world is our oyster and things are lining up perfectly, then minutes later, we can feel like we are buried beneath the impossible with no way out. It is a constant roller coaster ride.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our business is flax mylk or as we often call it, fiber mylk. malibu mylk is organic, sustainable and full of nutrients. We are full of omega-3s, low in cholesterol, and only have six ingredients. Flax is anti-inflammatory, full of protein and aids in digestion. We use no artificial flavors or preservatives.

In an age where the plant-based mylk industry is booming, sustainability is a real issue.  It takes over a gallon of water to produce a single almond, while the only irrigation for flax is from natural rainfall. Our products are clean, meaning they are allergen free: no nuts, no soy, no gluten, no dairy.

We also are committed to giving 1% of profits to Big Green, an organization committed to building learning gardens in low-income communities.

Look for us in Erewhon, Bristol Farms, Lassen’s, Farmshop and we’ll be in Whole Foods in mid March!

How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc.?
Success is believing in what we are creating. We are enjoying every step of this journey.

There are no more Monday morning blues, but instead, we’re excited to get to work and move the needle forward for something we care deeply about.

We feel so fortunate to have a great partnership and be working on a project that we love and that consumers are loving as well.
