Today we’d like to introduce you to Malena Cadiz.
Malena, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been playing music since I was a kid and started writing and recording music about ten years ago. I’ve released a few records, toured all over and have had the good fortune of working with some incredible musicians.
I started teaching a few years ago and since arriving in L.A. have worked with local music schools as a guitar and songwriting teacher. I developed a songwriting workshop that I’m really passionate about with the help of Songsmith L.A. One of my favorite things is to listen to songs and examine them closely — what makes a song work so perfectly, or what could be stronger. Its been so inspiring to me to be part of peoples’ exploration and growth as musicians and songwriters.
I started Coyote Canyon last year to expand my teaching practice and offer songwriting workshops, private songwriting coaching and kids’ guitar lessons.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been lots of ups and downs in my career as a musician. Teaching however has been such a grounding practice for me. I’m sure as my business progresses there will be struggles I can’t anticipate but so far its been a really natural progression.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Coyote Canyon Music – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At Coyote Canyon, I focus on finding one’s own unique songwriting style through exercises that tap into our own unique story and perspective. You don’t have to be a professional songwriter to explore songwriting as a means of self-expression. It’s such a powerful way of examining and finding beauty in one’s own story.
I offer workshops at my studio in L.A. and other special events around town. I’m really excited about a Tea and Song workshop with Haus of Sages in April. Held in a beautiful spot in Topanga, this will be our second time combining the meditative practice of tea leading into an intuitive space of music making and songwriting.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to holding more workshops and eventually offering songwriting retreats in beautiful, remote and inspiring places!
