Meet Malcolm Welford of MM Garage in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcolm Welford.

Malcolm, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a specialist collector car broker, having worked for Christie’s International auction house in London for many years, hosting auctions around the world (London, Paris, New York, Pebble Beach, etc.) then with my business partner we established our own niche collector car business with an international clientele.

Has it been a smooth road?
Very smooth, our clients are our friends. We did engage with a private equity company from the UK but sadly, they had not started in the right place with another business. Other than that, we are fine!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MM Garage story. Tell us more about the business.
We operate at the highest level of the business, so we are fortunate to handle some of the world’s most exciting and exclusive collector cars. We are also huge enthusiasts and attend all the premier events, race meetings, rallies, concours d’elegance, etc. I believe that it is our attention to detail and honesty/transparency which sets us apart from many others.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The business is going through a transition stage right now, with the younger generation more attuned to electric vehicles. As the older generation pass, so the education necessary to understand and operate an old car is diminishing. Also, there are significant concerns over the use of fossil fuels, more so in Europe than the USA so again it has an impact on using a collector car on the road; conversely there are more 1% high net worth clients in the world than ever before and the super rare collector cars are finite so the demand will remain strong for the very best.
