Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Tillman.
Alta Colina Vineyard is magic! We’re located in the heart of Paso Robles’ westside wine country–the perfect location to grow world-class wines.
At Alta Colina, our focus is strictly Rhone grapes. Think Grenache, Syrah, red blends, and beautiful white wines and Rose. Founded in 2003, Alta Colina is known for impeccable farming, minimal intervention winemaking, high-quality wines, incredible views, and warm hospitality. This is our home and livelihood and we love to share it through our wines!
Owner and longtime Winemaker, Bob Tillman, fell in love with this Adelaida District property because of its high elevation and unlimited potential for quality. A true family winery, the father/daughter team of Bob and Maggie Tillman is forging a legacy of quality and sustainability along with our small but mighty team.
Producing just 3000 cases per year from the estate, Alta Colina wines aren’t on every grocery shelf! Our small lot, handmade approach means we work with a handful of retail and restaurant partners while mostly sharing our wines directly through our wine club. We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing about farming is smooth! So often, when we see a bottle of wine, we think about the grape or the artwork on the label and that’s about it. Years of farming goes into every drop!
Alta Colina Vineyard has handled historic droughts, ill-timed thunderstorms, overly persistent pests, broke down equipment, busted irrigation pipes, and just about anything else that can get thrown at a farmer. Which is all part of why our wines are so good! There’s soul here. There’s tireless work and long hours. There’s also a deep love of what we do. And we feel it all every time we pop a cork!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Alta Colina Vineyard & Winery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Alta Colina is a family! We have an amazing 12-person amazing team that helps us from the Vineyard to the tasting room to the cellar.
My business card says, “Owner/Sales & Marketing,” which is true. We also all jump in wherever we’re needed! Last week for example, I woke up to check on the crew harvesting our grapes (by hand!) in the Vineyard, then headed down to the Winery to help the cellar team sort fruit for about an hour, then jumped onto my computer to catch up on email from our wonderful club members, and jumped on a Zoom call before lunch. No two days look the same, which we consider pretty lucky!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
When you ask me that question, my answer is usually something like, “We plan to keep our heads down, keep growing into the Vineyard (we still sell some grapes to other winemakers in the area), and have some fun while we share some great wines.” When you ask my dad, Bob, this question his answer is always, “we plan to make the best wine in the world!” That’s the plan! To get there, we’re always looking at how to improve while having fun. It’s still wine after all–something beautiful and delicious that brings people together!
