Meet Maggie Moore of deBebians in Jewelry District in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Moore.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in New York, but grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia. I have always loved jewelry, even from a young age. My mother would joke me that as a young girl, I would dig through her jewelry box and try on her jewelry, avoiding her costume jewelry and zoning in on ‘the real thing’. She has always said that it was “in my blood,” as my paternal bloodline consists of master silversmiths and most recently, my great-grandfather (Louis deBebian Moore) served as the Director of Tiffany & Co. during the 1940s and 1950s. After graduating from Mary Washington College in 2000, I moved to Carlsbad, Ca where I enrolled in the Gemological Institute of America. I completed the Graduate Gemologist program as well as studied jewelry design. I worked in the retail jewelry environment for a few years before joining forces with my business partner (and classmate at GIA), Sam Delijani. In 2005, deBebians.com was launched!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think that starting a new business is ever a smooth road like most small business owners, there are ups and downs and everything in between. Having been in business since 2005, not only has the jewelry industry evolved, but we’ve seen massive swings in the economy as well. That said, when Sam and I started deBebians as gemologists, I quickly realized that you need to have your hands in everything, including the business side of things. On top of being a gemologist, I’ve had to learn accounting, marketing, HR etc. Would I change anything? Absolutely not! I am so proud of deBebians and proud to say I own my own company!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about deBebians – what should we know?
deBebians is an online fine jewelry and diamond retailer located in the heart of the jewelry district in Los Angeles, Ca. We specialize in bridal including GIA certified diamonds, custom engagement rings, Charles & Colvard moissanite, Harro Gem moissanite, eternity rings, wedding bands etc as well as all other types of fine jewelry. I think my East Coast upbringing has also really helped us lead the way with signet rings as well. When Sam and I discussed starting our own business, our goal was to create a positive, uplifting and honest jewelry buying experience that would leave our clients knowing in their hearts that they picked the right company to work with. Jewelry is such a personal thing and our one on one interaction allows our clients to modify any of our designs and/or custom create their own vision with quality and speed of delivery.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Trustworthiness, plain and simple. Working with clients locally as well as all over the country and throughout the world, we know we need to deliver jewelry that meets and exceeds expectations. I understand in business, especially in the jewelry business, honesty is everything, our reputation is everything.
