Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison DeClercq.
Madison, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career in esthetics as a makeup artist in Los Angeles after a big move from Michigan at 19 years old. After my early years of experience in the beauty industry, I quickly became obsessed with skincare and how important it is to have healthy skin. So, I became a clinically-trained esthetician and a certified as a lash extension specialist and started working for myself. Shortly after is when my partner, Leslie Kritzer and I joined forces and created Skin Worship, a holistic beauty collective in Beverly Hills where I honed in on my skill and really grew my clientele. I love offering the balance of holistic skincare and lash extensions to my clients in today’s beauty-conscious world as I’ve always had a natural eye for aesthetics and a zeal for holistic well-being. It was at this time, I became aware and more conscious of important self-care is, and how to sleep, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle choices played a big part in our skin. Leslie and I both have always been very in-tune when it comes to mind, body spirit but it wasn’t until this year, that we brought in spiritual healers to Skin Worship and offered chakra clearing sessions to our clients as add on’s after their beauty treatments which have been a big success. Leslie and I also developed our Skin Worship Skincare Line that is available for purchase on skinworship.com & Revolve.com which has always been a big dream of mine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Just like any entrepreneur, I have had my share of challenges. One of the first challenges I faced right off the bat was investing in myself. This part is always intimidating when ( when you are young and broke) and starting a business for the first time. But I have to admit, it is true what they say: without risk, there is no reward.
Being a young female entrepreneur has also played a challenging role at times. People don’t always take you seriously or they think they can take advantage of you so you become a target. Speaking with confidence and knowing my worth has been something I learned to do through out my career thus far that I continue to work on. Learning to use my voice has been helpful in all aspects of my life, not just business.
Another challenge I still deal with is being a “boss”. I don’t necessarily think of myself as a boss so this influences the struggle I deal with managing people (especially people older than me) as I never want to come across as “bossy”. Finding the balance between friendly and bossy is a fine line that takes time and a lot of trial and error to perfect!
Please tell us about Skin Worship.
Skin Worship is a boutique beauty spa in Beverly Hills that offers holistic beauty treatments such as facials, brows, and lashes. We are most known for our spiritual approach to skincare offering treatments like “The Transformational Facial Ceremony” which includes, a deep cleansing facial with a light enzyme peel, Micro-needling, LED & Oxygen Therapy, Micro-current lifting and a foot and shoulder massage with a jade roller and essential oils. We also offer ancient Chinese treatments like our “Gua Sha and Cupping Facial” which helps collagen production and circulation in the face resulting in a glow that will last for days. All of our treatments have the option of adding on a 30-minute chakra clearing/healing session which definitely sets us our services apart from any other spa.
I specialize in lashes, brows, and sensitive skin treatments. I have struggled with rosacea from a young age and have learned throughout the years less is more when dealing with red, inflamed, irritated and sensitive skin which is why we created out skincare line. Your skin is your biggest organ and overtreating it is worse than not treating it at all. Your pores are living filters, and they need to breathe. That is why we’ve created an evolved line of skincare products, perfect for most skin types. Our ingredient profile is simple, never exceeding 12 raw ingredients at a time. We source organic, animal-free, and sustainable agriculture-based ingredients, with most of our products exceeding 80 percent organic content. Exactness is our art form, and the synthesis of our ingredients is what sets us above the rest.
I have to say, the thing I am most proud about it is that throughout my 10-year journey in the beauty industry which can be very vain, I have pivoted the way in which I approach beauty; from the inside out. If you are taking care of yourself which means your body, your mind and your spirit; you will radiate happiness and joy which in turn radiates beauty. Makeup, moisturizers, and lashes are all just extra 🙂
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m honestly not sure what I would do differently if I had the chance. I feel grateful to have been able to successfully accomplish building Skin Worship the destination, the skincare line, and the brand and if things went perfectly smooth, I don’t think I would be as appreciative as I am. I feel I am better off learning from all the mistakes and lessons I have learned on this journey and wouldn’t change a thing.
