Meet Madeline Miller of Coaching With Madeline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Miller

Hi Madeline, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I came to the U.S. from Australia in 2015 to study entertainment law and landed a legal and business affairs executive job for a Hollywood production, financing, and sales company. It underwent many changes, and I jumped ship at the right time to work on the next James Bond production, No Time To Die, as its production attorney. From there, I got to do a number of brand partnership deals and found them really interesting and a nice departure from the talent/production legal side of the law. Realizing I had achieved what I wanted as a lawyer, in 2020/2021, I took a step back from full-time work as a lawyer and set up my consulting practice. I wanted to explore other opportunities that better aligned with my purpose and question what brought me the most satisfaction and joy. Joy is often overlooked at work, and I realized that after spending years chasing external goals and beating myself up for never feeling like I had really achieved my potential, I had neglected to nurture that feeling. I tried a couple of different business and law-related things, but I never found an organization I enjoyed working with.

I realized that this was a problem. After 15 years of working for multiple companies, industries, and sectors on four continents, I realized that work struggle was universal, and everyone shared the same goal of wanting to be respected, successful, and happier at work. Drawn to help others, particularly those who long for greater clarity, satisfaction, and control but are not given access to leadership training, I developed my A.I.R. coaching framework (Alignment, Influence, and Resilience) based on my own experiences and those of the hundreds of leaders I have observed around me. It took me a decade to perfect, but now I can share it with others and see their results in four months! I now work with Gen Z and Millennials, or as I like to say, Rising Leaders, to find alignment between their purpose, work, and career goals, developing the interpersonal skills that build influence and set them up for leadership success at any stage in their career. They go on to get promotions, career changes, and leadership positions, but the most profound result is the healthy emotional resilience they form to deal with setbacks, disappointment, and conflicts. Working through my framework together, I’ve seen how people can transform into confident, respected employees and business owners who feel in control of their decisions and paths and then go on to greatly impact those around them, and this brings me immense joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first decade of my career was not smooth, ever! It was filled with twists and turns and struggles. Some of them were external, and a lot of them were internal. I experienced some pretty poor leadership and had classic symptoms of burnout at stages. I didn’t like telling people what I did for work for a long time, as I didn’t feel it reflected who I thought I was. I knew that was an issue! It wasn’t until I started leaning out of the “do more” mentality, more work, more hours, more sacrifices, and leaning into the things I could control, like understanding my values, drivers, and triggers, that things became a lot clearer and, subsequently, easier. Now, I work for myself, which is filled with much more uncertainty – all decisions are my responsibility! – but an enormous amount of creativity and service, so I feel far more aligned with my values and purpose than I did before. I have plans to grow my business and reach more people while pushing myself to experiment and challenge myself with different forms of content and media. I would say that is hard work, and I struggle to manage my time effectively, but it also feels gratifying, like I’m no longer trying to be something for external validation, which is how it felt for a long time. So, the hard work and “struggles” are deeply rewarding for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Through my A.I.R coaching framework, I help perfectionists and people pleasers go from feeling powerless to powerful without having to fake it till they make it! I’m really proud of my A.I.R. coaching framework. I poured my heart and soul into it and drew and to see it positively impact others in their career journey is just the best feeling. It differs from other executive coaching offerings as it targets leadership development in those who need it the most but who are overlooked in conventional leadership training. It is the kind of program I wish I had throughout my career to save me from a lot of stress, anxiety, and spiraling. I would have been able to get clear on what I wanted, have difficult conversations, and self-advocate more directly and efficiently. It’s a framework that helps you develop an authentic leadership presence, looks at who you want to be at work, and then asks whether your actions, decisions, and behavior are supporting that vision, so it is highly organic and customized. I believe career and leadership coaching is an essential service for everyone. We all want to feel purposeful, impactful, and confident in our work and career decisions, and my framework guides people to do just that and see significant differences in only four months.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Self-trust, aka connecting with your intuition, is the most important thing we can do in business and our lives. We put a lot of obstacles in the way to prevent us from doing it. We look to external sources of validation, opinions, achievements, etc., to develop our self-worth and spend a lot of time spinning and ruminating, whereas the answers usually are found within. We can access them with the right support to change our limiting self-beliefs. I used to make a lot of assumptions about what others were thinking or how things would turn out without slowing down and asking or seeking out feedback, good or bad. I had some bad early work experiences, which set me on an anxious, avoidant work journey. Ultimately, though, I taught myself to listen to my intuition, trust myself, and make decisions that served my interests, and it was the best thing I could have done. I work with my clients to guide them through the same process. Whether it be learning to slow down anxious or racing thoughts or how to have the difficult conversations they need to have, if there is one lesson I can impart, it is that the body or heart knows the mind just has to catch up!
