Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeleine Perez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madeleine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to LA from NYC seven years ago…up until that point I was a journalist for ABC News. I always had a love for real estate but I didn’t really pursue it till four years ago when I took a leap of faith and got my real estate license. It was a total career change for me and my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. Now I’m a residential real estate agent at Compass. My office is in Hollywood but I really work in every area of LA.
Journalism to real estate is a huge move. Glad to hear it’s going well! We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Real estate isn’t for everyone – you really have to love this business to succeed. I’ve been lucky to have great mentors along the way to help me manage tricky deals and potential pitfalls. The biggest struggle that I had in the beginning was making sure everyone knew I was an agent and getting clients to use me when I didn’t have a ton of experience – learning to pitch yourself is an important skill and it was one that took me some time.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your practice?
I work exclusively in residential real estate across Los Angeles – I work with buyers and sellers all over town.
LA is full of glamorous and expensive homes. We see lavish parties + reality shows about them.
Do I represent some of them? Yes. But I also work with lots of first-time buyers, small condos and starter homes. Some of my proudest deals aren’t the ones that came with the biggest price tag. For me, every listing is a luxury and each deal is equally important as the rest.
What sets me apart is that honesty and integrity are a huge part of my business. And I also don’t subscribe to the idea of a “neighborhood expert”. For me, in this digital world, we need to be much more. Areas that once seemed so far away are now only a click away, and so a skilled agent needs to be more flexible and have reach beyond a tiny niche.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a tricky thing. Some of it is really just good planning and intuition so that when an opportunity arises, you see it and grab it. Some may see that as luck but I just see it as solid preparation. We all hit hard times and moments of bad luck, but the important things are to be resilient and to have the right people around you to help lift you back up.
