Meet Lys Wilcox of Dots Daughter Designs in Mount Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lys Wilcox.

Lys, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m the owner and head designer for Dot’s Daughter Designs, a greeting/note card and fine art firm founded in 2000. I have enjoyed a successful career in publishing, advertising and public relations. The 1999 birth of my son Jaime became a watershed moment for my husband and I. My imagination and artistic vision was unleashed and led me to retire from the publicity business in order to find a more personal creative outlet. With no formal art training and a strong sense of color, I began creating handmade greeting cards for friends. As a result, Dots Daughter Designs – was born.

I have participated in several juried art shows and festivals yearly. In 2004-2005 I exhibited at the annual National Stationery Show in New York where I secured a licensing deal with Cathe Tate, a London based Greeting Card Company. In addition, I Introduced my new beaded holiday line at Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills store. In 2006, my holiday beaded cards were in 12 Neiman Marcus stores around the country.

In 2007, I had several designs selected for the Women Wear section of Martin Dawbers, the Big Book of Fashion Illustration. In 2008, I joined the Art Coop, 10 Women Gallery in Venice, CA.

In addition, my work has been featured at The Whole Nine Gallery in Culver City, CA. My art has also been featured on HGTV’s “That’s Clever.” Later this spring, I will be exhibiting at the Jackelope Art Festival in Pasadena, Art on Palm in Altadena and Affaire of the Arts in Culver City.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Many challenges, such is life. As a mother of a teenager and devoted wife of 31 years, there are not enough days to create. My main struggle is keeping up with the demand. So that I can make more. My business is growing and it takes lots of effort. But it’s my life and creating brings me so much joy!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
With no formal art training and often using photos of my husband and son for inspiration, I created handmade greeting cards and botanical inspired designs and fine art. I am currently working in collage like medium using photos, beads, flocking and paint to create modern still life fantasy floral. My designs are available on journals, puzzles and canvas.

My hand made, sometimes beaded botanical cards are very popular and sell well. I’m am proud that I am establishing a brand that totally represents me. What sets me apart is that I put as much effort and artistry in my note cards as I do in my 40×40 canvas work.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been out going. I am driven and focused. I never meet a stranger and I love to talk about life, love, art, family, travel and food. I’m from New Jersey which makes me very street wise. I’m very aware.

Pricing:

  • My cards range from $4-$10
  • My puzzles range $25.-$40.
  • My fine art $75-$1000.

I’ve known Lys for much of the time this line was being created and I’m not surprised Lys is getting the recognition she deserves for her art. The cards are so much more detailed than a photo can show. I have some from years ago that are sweet keepsakes. You can feel the love in them.

Congrats Lys. You are one of the most precious individuals in the world. I worked with you in the 90’s at a major studio. You were just evolving. Your spirit is reflected in your cards.
