Meet Lydia Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Kim.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lydia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always loved drawing ever since I was little. Growing up, I always knew that art has always given me happiness and a passion to be an artist. As my passion for art has grown bigger, I decided to attend Otis College of Art and Design. When I first started school, I started off learning basic skills with traditional mediums in my artworks, and later on I was introduced to digital media and chose to study concept art. However, I found myself lost and felt myself not fitting within concept art. I started to question if I was 100% sure if I truly wanted to be a concept artist. When I was struggling with my major, my friends introduced me to motion graphics, and there I discovered what I truly wanted to do. I was driven by how there were various of styles in motion and was inspired by the works from all the artists in the motion industry. And from there, I decided to be a motion designer/illustrator.

After graduating from OTIS, I have never regretted my decisions and was a worthwhile choice I made. I am now working at motion studios for three years as a freelancer. I had a lot of valuable experience at different studios, working with amazing artists in the industry. I truly love what I do and I am looking forward to my future as a designer/illustrator in Los Angeles.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for me. After graduating from OTIS, the first half-year of freelancing was difficult. Keep in contact with studios and sending emails confused me, and I face down a lot. However, I kept myself positive, pushing myself to be creative. Now looking back, all those experiments have taught me a lesson. I truly thank my friends and family, who always support and give me good advice when I was going through a hard time in my life. I would not have become who I am today without them.

What were you like growing up?
I was born in Texas, lived in Pennsylvania and S Korea, and 2009 – today I am here in Los Angeles. I grew up watching classic Disney 2D animation movies and I loved to draw from when I was young. Back then I was one of those kids who were shy and quiet in middle school and high school but loved to draw creating my own world in my sketchbook and canvas. Today I still love to draw with my iPad in my own space at home drinking coffee.
