Meet Lulu Simon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Simon.

Lulu, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
On my 6th birthday, I had a Barbie birthday cake and I remember so distinctly blowing out the candles and wishing I’d written Lucky by Britney Spears. Of course, that wish did not come true, but ever since that moment I knew I wanted to write songs and make music, which I started doing when I was 12.

Since then, I’ve probably written around 100 songs, most of which could be categorized as “singer-songwriter” music, but it wasn’t until I graduated from college that I was able to actually focus all of my attention on music and figure out exactly what it was I wanted to create. Despite my foundation being in acoustic songwriting, I am now channeling my inner six year old, returning to pop music (my first love), and am finally making just banger after banger and I am so proud and so excited about all of it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t always been an easy ride. I wanted so badly to drop out of school and focus on music, but that wasn’t a possibility for me. So I had felt torn between what I had to do and what I wanted to do. After I graduated and was actually able to make music full time, I suddenly felt like really ill-equipped and unprepared. I wasn’t sure where to start or how to advocate for myself. When I first started out, I was meeting with a bunch of people who were really discouraging and made me feel embarrassed and small. When I finally hit my stride I started meeting people who understood me and trusted my instincts instead of bulldozing through my vision. I’m just at a point where I am so certain of the music I want to make and the type of artist I want to be, I’m sort of unwilling to negotiate or compromise when it comes to my artistic integrity, and I think that can be a turn off to people who want a bigger hand in artist development.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I come from a family of musicians so I feel really lucky to have their support but also their input, I don’t trust anyone’s musicality or ears the way I trust theirs. I also have a strong support system and network of friends outside of my family who recognize my drive and dedication and have helped me along the way, both personally and professionally. I also feel really lucky because I know what I want to do and I have mentors that believe in and support me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of Denzyl Feigelson of Platoon, who sat down with me, listened to my demos, and heard something that other people didn’t and took a chance on me.
