Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Mon Dieu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lulu. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Bootleg Bombshells were created in February of 2013 in the basement of the Townhouse and Del Monte, a historical venue in Venice that was actually a Speakeasy during Prohibition. I went in to audition for a position as a burlesque solo performer. One week later, I had my own show! I didn’t have a group name or an emcee for the first two weeks, it was a rough start.
I have had to make a lot of changes over the years but the show organically grew into what it is today. The show was inspired by the energy of Venice; wild, eclectic, energetic and free-spirited. Our show in Venice is a free weekly show, we perform every Wednesday night at midnight after Venice Underground Comedy.
We have a core group of emcees and performers that include Tito Bonito, Lux LaCroix, Coco Ono, Elese Navidad and myself. Each month, we feature a resident guest performer and every week features a rotating special guest or two!
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been a dancer/performer all of my life but not a producer. I’ve learned a lot along the way and will always continue to (hopefully) learn from my mistakes. It can sometimes be difficult drawing the line between friend / Producer. I’m also a Virgo/Libra so while I want to be completely organized and get things done in a timely manner, I want everyone to be happy. This is not easy, especially when putting on a weekly show! The Bootleg Bombshells recently celebrated their 5 year Anniversary on Valentines Day at the Townhouse! I’m so proud to be a part of history in this beautiful venue that has so much history.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Bootleg Bombshells – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Bootleg Bombshells are anything and everything but classic burlesque (with no offense to the classics). We are a weekly show that includes burlesque, performance art, cabaret, contortion, aerialists and boylesque. We are heavily immersed in our audience, it is not often that a performer is “stuck on stage”. We LOVE to get in our audience’s face AND laps. 🙂
What I absolutely love the most is the comradery backstage. We have the best performers that Los Angeles has to offer. That being said, I want our backstage vibe to be sans ego. It doesn’t matter who you’ve worked with, where you have been or how many trophies you have. It boils down to how you treat the fellow performers you’re working with. It is a small community and I’m proud that our backstage feels like family. We should be inspiring each other and lifting each other up, especially these days.
The Bootleg Bombshells can also be seen at Harvelle’s in Downtown Long Beach and hopefully in East LA in the near future.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the weather and the fact that, if you wanted to you go drive to the beach and to the snow in one day. I love the food and diversity. I couldn’t survive without the wild ones, the artists, the outcasts. I need creative freedom and a place that thrives on this. I am also a mother of two girls and I am doing my best to make sure that they stay true to their weird, wild, smart and beautiful selves. I hate the traffic.
