Today we’d like to introduce you to Luao Liu.
Hi Luao, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a very young age, I was fascinated with artistic creation. My family was very open-minded and supported my decision to further my studies in the United States. When choosing my major, I didn’t want to focus solely on illustration, so I opted for animation. After graduation, I worked for a while with a documentary filmmaker alongside friends. It was then I realized that my professional skills were not up to par, prompting me to pursue a master’s degree. After obtaining my master’s, I embarked on my journey as a freelancer. I spend every day happily doing the work I love, hoping that my animations can bring joy and happiness to everyone.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first graduated from graduate school, I had a clear career plan for myself: to secure a full-time position in a large company by any means. However, I continuously failed to receive job offers, leading to significant frustration. A friend reached out to me, explaining that many 2D animators primarily work as freelancers. My setback wasn’t due to my shortcomings but rather the direction I had chosen. Comforted by her words, I quickly pulled myself together and re-evaluated my career path. Starting with my first client, I officially embarked on my journey as a freelance writer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a 2D animator, and I also work on illustrations, storyboards, and motion design. Among my freelancing experiences, what I’m most proud of is the explainer animation I collaborated on with a Swiss non-profit organization. During this collaboration, I was solely responsible for scriptwriting, voice-over design, animation design, storyboard design, and coordinating with voice-over actors. Thanks to my excellent coordination skills, the project was a tremendous success. This achievement is something I am immensely proud of.
How do you think about luck?
As previously mentioned, friends have played a crucial role in my career journey. They’ve uplifted me during my low moments and offered solutions when I felt helpless. I am grateful to have such wonderful friends in my life. I hope everyone can encounter such significant individuals in their own lives.
