Meet Los Feliz Special Effects Makeup Artist: Katie Middleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Middleton.

Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m from Richmond, Virginia and have been painting and drawing as long as I can remember. Before becoming a makeup artist, I studied fine arts and received my BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. I later continued my education at Vancouver Film School where I studied makeup and special effects. I then moved to Los Angeles to start my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was definitely not as smooth road as most freelance and artistic jobs are not. It takes a long time to meet people and build enough contacts to work steadily. Moving to a new city alone made it even more challenging, but every year got a little bit better. From working on a taco truck to making spreadsheets, I took a lot of odd jobs before I could eventually live off of only working as a makeup artist.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
I came from a family of artists so I was always encouraged to continue painting and drawing while I was growing up.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Every new project is different, so I always look forward to new challenges and a reason to be creative! I also still paint in my free time, so I plan on putting together a new collection of paintings, too. I’m currently working on a series of comical portraits of my husband.
