Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Lyttle.
Nathan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in the Baltimore area as a misfit skateboarder and musician I never thought much about the idea of going to college or having a “career”. I’ve always enjoyed art and loved to draw but it wasn’t until I spent the first two years after high school working in a warehouse that I realized I needed to do something else with my life.
Since graduating from art school, I’ve worked for a variety of web shops while still playing in different bands and entertaining my dreams of being a rock star.
About 4 years ago, I decided it was time to move from the East coast and experience life in California. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to work remotely for a company on the east coast and thanks to Dribbble, I’ve had a pretty successful freelance career on the side. This has given me the opportunity to work a variety of interesting projects from websites to product and app design.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think my experiences have been any worse than most people. Of course, there are always going to be shifts in the economy that make people worry about job security and you’re always going to have personality conflicts with clients and coworkers, but largely it’s been a smooth ride.
What is the most difficult part of what you do?
Working from home has some awesome advantages but one of the major drawbacks is the lack of separation between work and life. There are the days where I find myself with a margarita in hand at 3pm but there are the other days where I look up and it’s 1am. Ultimately, the good outweighs the bad.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Since I’ve lived in LA I’ve either been offered jobs or had serious inquiries from really successful companies such as Disney/ABC, Uber, and others. At one point in my life that would have been how I defined success; by the notch on my resume. These days, however, I define success by my quality of life. Being able to work on my terms, spend time traveling, with friends and family and all the while putting money away for the future; that’s my current definition of success. My focus is low stress and happiness.
What are your plans for the future?
Personally, I prefer living in the moment over making “big plans” for the future. Of course, I have goals and dreams. One of them is to help my brother in his freelance endeavors. I’ve opened myself up to taking on more freelance work than I can handle on my own with the goal of having my brother partner with me. Who knows, maybe one day a business could grow from this but right now I’m just happy to share the wealth. Family and friends are what matter.
