Today we’d like to introduce you to the lovely Cheyanne Armstrong.
Cheyanne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was in high school I had an interest in makeup but my counselor told me it wasn’t a real job. I ended up going to a community college to studied fine art. After a few years of schooling, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and took a year off from college and work to go through chemotherapy. With the love and help of my now fiance, I was able to overcome my illness. He works in the film industry and brought me to set one day. I immediately gravitated towards the makeup artist on set, amazed after all those years of not realizing that it could be a profitable job. She told me all about the industry and from that point on I was hooked. All of my free time was spent trying to teach myself the art of makeup. I practiced on anyone who would let me and watched some of the greats (IE Charlotte Tilbury, Lisa Eldrige, Val garland) online tutorials to pick apart as much technique as I possibly could. Eventually, I started to build up a clientele, doing small jobs for nearly nothing and since then I have worked on commercials, red carpets, and feature films.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing about this line of work has been easy. Gaining new clients is tough and making sure they come back to you is even harder. Not to mention the hours can be grueling.
What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
I love working with clients that are going to events or screenings, but I also really love the commercial world.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I wish I would have reached out to other artists sooner than I did. There is definitely power in numbers.
