Meet Los Angeles Photographer: Kyle Monk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Monk.

Kyle, how did you get to where you are today?
Assisting, shooting… more shooting and years of patience and hard work!

Has it been a smooth road?
For me, it was challenging to gain exposure, clients, and momentum as a working professional photographer. You need patience, passion, and determination. It’s no fun when you are broke, rejected and questioning whether or not your work is good. I found myself to be the biggest obstacle. I go through ups and downs, times where I am feeling motivated and creative and times when I am not. It’s simply up to you to make it happen!

When you look back, can you point to a period when you wanted to quit or a period that was really frustrating?
Yes, there was a time I decided to change careers and follow the money rather than pursue happiness. At the time, I had to turn down 2 photo gigs because they fell on a work week. I decided not to let that happen again and within 3 weeks of the new job and being unhappy I decided to quit and really push harder to become a better photographer.

What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
It’s okay to get discouraged, rejected, make mistakes, be broke and feel lost. Keep shooting, assisting and pushing to become a photographer. If you truly want to become a photographer you will be. It’s a lifestyle with all-in commitment. It’s also a business you must learn to run and nurture. It will be years of hard work but years of happiness and fulfillment. Do not give up!

Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
I am excited to grow as a photographer. To improve my technical ability -lighting and image capturing techniques. I am excited to see and think differently from years of knowledge and experience. I want to create, be creative and work on meaningful projects. I want to meet new people, share stories and collaborate with others. Also, I am eager to see, experience and capture more of this world. I am excited about life!
