Meet Los Angeles Makeup Artist: Melanie Ramirez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Ramirez.

Melanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for makeup stemmed from the time I was a toddler indulging in my mother’s cosmetic bag. Once I graduated high school, I really didn’t know there was a career in makeup. I just started doing makeup for friends and family. One thing led to another and I began test shooting with photographers and models. I then went on to work for a well-known cosmetics line. I became fashion show certified and became a highly requested artist. This has given me the advantage to learn from and work with amazing celebrity makeup artists.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never been an easy road. Every job I have received in this industry has been due to hard work, determination, and hustle. Nothing has ever been handed to me, which is why I’m so proud of where I am, even though I’m still not where I’d like to be. I’m also a single mother. I’m constantly and consistently pursuing my passion, but I still have to work full-time in another industry to ensure my son’s needs are met.

Has there been people or an institution that has played a pivotal role in your career?
My personal inspirations are my son and mom. My son is my motivation… my reason. He’s my #1 fan… I hope that as he watches me, he learns to chase his dreams, work hard, and never give up!

My mom is my greatest support and #1 client. Growing up, I’d watch her get ready, always looking beautiful. She was the first to inspire my love of makeup.

And then there are the amazing artists in this industry… Gregory Arlt and MAC Cosmetics gave me my first LA Fashion Week experience. Since then, I have met, networked, or have learned from the best in this industry. In recent years, I’ve been blessed to have met and worked with Emmy-award winning Makeup Artist Melanie Mills. She is someone I look up to and I’m thankful for the awesome opportunities, recommendations, and support that she has given me! It means the world when someone well known in the industry likes your work!

What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
When I started in this industry, my focus was only Bridal and Special Events. My love then became Runway and Photoshoots. I’ve come full circle it seems like, as Bridal and Special Events are booking more consistently and it’s exciting!!! What’s not to love about making someone feel absolutely beautiful?! I also have a couple of projects coming up that I’m excited to share when the time comes.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Although I started pursuing my passion at 20, there is a lot that I didn’t know, and being in this industry you’re constantly learning. For me, I would have become knowledgeable in marketing myself and networking. I think if I knew how to do that early on, I’d be closer to my goals and dreams as an artist.

What Melanie Ramirez did not mention was how she can pull out the beauty in older women. My friends and I have had the good fortune of having her do our makeup and we not only looked great we felt fabulous and we are retired and in our 60s. I love Melanie.
