Meet Hair Stylist and Makeup Artist: Jessica Steingard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Steingard.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I attended Makeup Designory, a school in Burbank CA, once I finished High school. After makeup school, I worked a few different retail cosmetics jobs such as MAC and a few salons and boutiques. I trained with a variety of makeup brand and also with airbrush foundation. I decided to quit Retail and go freelance, mostly focusing on Bridal Makeup and Hair, but also did many photo and video shoots. I have been doing Hair and Makeup for over 10 years now. I love what I do and the clients I work with. I feel so blessed to have a job I am so passionate about.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest challenge along my journey was having the confidence to leave the corporate world and become my own boss. Going 100% freelance was scary, but so worth it in the end. Running my own business has taught me so much about being organized and how to work with all kinds of clients. I’m always learning how I can grow and make my business run smoother, but I love the freedom and flexibility.

What role has luck had in your life and career?
I don’t really believe in luck. I think everything happens for a reason. Every situation we go through good or bad we can learn from. And when things don’t work out the way we hoped, I believe they weren’t meant to be. But I know if I work hard and am kind to people that good opportunities will always come my way.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think it’s a mix of being good with people and having a good work ethic. In the wedding industry, when a bride picks her Makeup/hair Artist, she wants to know you will do a great job, but also she wants to like you. You are helping her and all her bridesmaids get ready for the most important day of her life. I try to make my brides feel comfortable and calm so they can enjoy the whole process. As far as work ethic, I make sure my brides have 100% trust that I will be organized, on time, and prepared. The last thing they need to worry about on their big day is that I am running late, or forgot something or don’t have the schedule done. Also, I am still always learning. I have been doing hair and makeup for over 10 years, but still love to take classes, watch new tutorial videos, try new products, so that I can be up to date on latest trends and techniques.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
The best thing about LA is the style. It’s cool, fresh, and modern, But there is also so much history as well., It all blends together and makes for a very fun eclectic city! Of course, the least thing I like is the traffic. haha.
