Meet Fashion Designer: Lili Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lili Nguyen.

Lili, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I started drawing at the early age of 5.  I began to conceptualize, fashion style and design when I was 8.  I graduated secondary school with immediate plans to move to LA to immerse myself into the world of fashion and music.  But due to my traditional upbringing, I was encouraged to lead a different path. After receiving my marketing degree from ASU, I felt unfulfilled and incomplete.

I then transitioned to LA and attended fashion school, but second guessed myself and did not major in fashion design.  During this ten year period, I managed to get into the music and television industry; I dabbled in freelance work doing visual design/merchandising, apparel buying, personal shopping/styling and then hopped over into mainstream fashion retail.  I continued to feel incomplete after all of these wonderful experiences, which led me to get back into school to pursue design.  As I’ve been working a full-time job while developing my fashion brand Truaura, I have unexpectedly developed relationships with so many genuine, successful people who are adamant about helping to take my career to the next level.

I’ve learned in life, it’s not about having an early start in your career in order to be successful; it’s all about timing. Every single one of my experiences has prepared me to be successful for this very moment and for what’s to come.

Has it been a smooth road?
Despite not having a support system in the home, I have fought relentlessly to bring my vision to fruition.  In developing a fashion brand independently, the most challenging part overall is not getting to exercise my creativity at my leisure.  I’ve been carefully building Truaura to ultimately sustain longevity, so I’m focused on infusing precision in every aspect from collaborating with like-minded individuals right down to minor details such as knowing the reactive nature of intricate materials.  In formulating the best-suited strategies to fulfill the needs of Truaura, this too can be tremendous in itself.

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
Due to technological progression at an accelerated pace, I project it replacing systematic standards from product development to POS, but also creating new opportunities of many facets simultaneously…

Has there been a particular challenge that you’ve faced over the years?
Having a million cool ideas but I’m only one person lol….one dream at a time!

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Don’t sell your soul j/k but not really lol….Be open be fierce but most importantly, do not lose yourself in the process. Your foundation is your brand in life let alone in business.
