Meet Lorraine Beraho of GlowRx Skincare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorraine Beraho.

Lorraine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m Dr. Lorraine Beraho, a board-certified pediatrician, skincare enthusiast, and the founder of GlowRx Skincare. As a woman of color, I quickly realized, skincare, like fashion, is not one size fits all. I discovered how many women of color, especially teens, have specific skin problems that go untreated by popular skincare brands. After years of struggling with these same challenges, I decided to create a skincare line to address the skin issues that young adults with melanin-rich skin face in today’s busy world.

With my wealth of exposure to skincare challenges and my experience in clinical practice, I was able to create a product line that reflects a unique combination of clean, clinical strength, and nontoxic ingredients formulated to beaut-i-fy and “glow-i-fy!” Daily, my patients and their parents share their frustration with available skin products as well as there skin goals which has helped guide my formulation process.

Our hero product, Moringa Luminous Face Oil, is liquid gold. I personally sourced this single origin oil from Rwanda on a visit to spend time with my grandmother who lives there. This miracle oil is super light and targets everything from fine lines to hyperpigmentation. It’s cold-pressed twice for maximum extraction of nutrients and each purchase supports sustainable income for farmers in the arid province of Rwanda where the Moringa seeds are harvested.

GlowRx’s journey began Summer 2018–I resigned from my job at a community health center in Washington, DC to travel to Liberia in support of an Ebola Research Project lead by the National Institutes of Health. 2 weeks into my trip I ran out of scalp oil and perused local stores stumbling upon a Baobab cold-pressed oil which my hair loved! I began to research what other cold-pressed oils were on the continent that I could try realizing that many seed oils are bursting with nutrients helpful for topical use.

On my way back to the U.S. I visited my grandmother in Rwanda and discovered Moringa oil.

Upon my return to the U.S., I traveled across the country to resume my clinical practice in Los Angeles. I currently work at a community health center taking care of patients who are publicly insured and socioeconomically challenged because that’s the demographic I have always wanted to serve.

In the evenings and on the weekends, I have been working tirelessly to spread the GLOW contracting a U.S. FDA approved lab and formulating vegan, multi-tasking skincare products that your skin will thank you for.

My mother, an ICU nurse, has been a huge help from the inception of GlowRx, she helps ship products out on her days off and I also ship products out from the west coast myself on my lunch breaks.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am currently self-funded so there are economic limitations which encourage me to get creative with my goals as well as strategically plan for next steps–staying prepared so that I won’t have to get prepared when a major opportunity presents itself.

I work full time and I love being a Physician, it is my calling and I often wonder how I will be able to juggle everything since GlowRx Skincare is a natural offshoot of my medical mandate to educate and promote healthy practices for the skin and wellness in general. I take things one day at a time viewing entrepreneurship as a journey and not a race. There is no overnight success and I am thankful for examples that I can relate with during my late nights.

Please tell us about GlowRx Skincare.
GlowRx is a one woman show supported by consultants, family, and friends. As a practicing Physician, I address skin conditions daily in clinic and realized that many skin related frustrations my patients described were related to over complicated skincare routines containing harsh ingredients that can leave skin dehydrated and inflamed. These routines are particularly damaging to those with melanin rich skin due to hyperpigmentation, dryness, and other effects of skincare overload.

As a board-certified Pediatrician, my teenage patients often complain about their “bad skin” with blemish-free, perfectly even skin = #skingoals. I created GlowRx Skincare to change the narrative: healthy skin is good skin and proper nourishment with hydrating, clean ingredients can result in glowing skin.

Life can be complicated enough, I created an uncluttered clean skincare line powered by multi-tasking, potent botanicals and non-toxic ingredients that support the specific needs of melanin rich skin including dryness, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.

Many clinical skincare doctor-led brands are created by older males who can’t relate to the customer base and who are far removed from current customer concerns. GlowRx is here to become a millennial-doctor led brand addressing skin challenges specific to melanin rich skin tones.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Ahhhh, great question! I would have started with one product and continued adding additional products overtime to avoid the stress of managing inventory for multiple SKUs while building my brand.
