Meet Lori Fetrick of Burbank Fitness Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Fetrick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was always a tomboy and grew up playing sports. In college, I tried to do it all– school, a full-time job, and still play sports. Eventually something had to give and, unfortunately, it was sports that had to go. So from there I decided to join a gym and would go during my lunch break. It was then that I “caught the bug” and fell in love with fitness. I set my sights on competitive bodybuilding and within my first year I not only competed, but won. That made me realize my passion for personal training so I got certified. I was training clients and myself for competitions (all while still working a regular 9-5) when American Gladiators came around. I auditioned with them and ended up spending the next 10 years on the show and traveling around the world with them. Once that was over I opened my own gym, sold it, opened a tanning salon, sold it, then got into real estate and financial planning, but never stopped training. Fitness has been and always will be my biggest passion and it’s something that will always be in my life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My career path has been a little different than most. I went from spending a decade on a hit television show and getting to travel the world training and doing what I love, to having to go back to normal life. That transition of going back to normalcy and deciding what my next move at the time would be was the biggest struggle of my career. It certainly wasn’t easy trying to navigate, but one thing leads to another and it eventually led me to learning that I loved operating gyms which ultimately led me here to Burbank Fitness Club.

Burbank Fitness Club – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I came on board as the General Manager of Burbank Fitness Club. We are a “small”, local gym in the heart of Downtown Burbank. I use the word small loosely because in actuality we are 23,000 square feet of gym with about 3,500 members. We have such a close, community vibe inside though that it doesn’t feel that large. We offer a cardio deck, a functional fitness area, a weight lifting level, 60 members’ classes a week, plus we have both a yoga and spin studio. We have top-notch instructors and trainers that we are very proud of. They have done everything from competing in the Olympics, competitive body building, and one has even lost half her body weight and been featured nationally for it. That all takes me back to the community feeling that we have at Burbank Fitness Club though because it’s true. We are all very supportive of one another and our members.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would have to say the proudest moment of my career would be the time I spent on American Gladiators. I didn’t get that opportunity by luck. I fought for that role for 3 months. I truly believe that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Those experiences helped shape me into the person I am today and have led me down this career path of being able to manage the gym. I truly love fitness, I love people, and my past experience opens conversations and allows me to connect to our members.
