Today we’d like to introduce you to Vishal Kumar. Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Vishal.
Vishal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Grew up playing sports most of my life and became passionate about the body and its capabilities when entering college. Pursued a degree in Kinesiology and began working as a fitness trainer once I graduated. During this time I also worked in a physical therapy clinic and learned a lot about how the clinical side of the industry functions. I’ve always enjoyed a movement based training system which stems from being active in martial arts, soccer, yoga and more unconventional methods of training. I currently work independently and am focusing on being able to travel and teach in the years to come while also ever expanding my own training so I have more to offer for those seeking a coach.
Has it been a smooth road?
I firmly believe you should pursue what you are passionate about. With that being said then failure is imminent and that’s how we begin to learn and grow. I’ve gone through ups and downs contemplating whether I want to pursue a career in health and fitness or completely change gears to something different that may seem secure but wouldn’t truly make me happy. I love what I do and want to offer my knowledge and exploration to people that I can help. The hardest part is getting started and diving in 100% because often times the fear of the unknown can hold us back, but it’s also that fear that can drive us forward once we begin!
What are your plans for the future?
As far as future plans are concerned I am open to whatever comes my way that is within the realm of what my principles are. I enjoying working with any client base that truly is willing to learn and improve their physical capacity as I strive to do every day. From athletes to rehab patients, I hope to bring a perspective on training that focuses on longevity and to teach people tools they can keep with them forever. I would like to become more involved with some companies that I feel like I can identify with and hopefully one day begin to develop relationships throughout the globe to travel and teach. If all goes well then I would like to move out of the country next year to somewhere i can make an impact on those that aren’t as exposed to the abundance of training knowledge that we are fortunate to have access to in California.
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
This industry is tough! It will eat you up and spit you right back out. I’ve never been the most athletic or naturally gifted athlete but I never stop! Even when I would compete alongside or against high level people at any point in my life I knew that if i just kept working and believed in myself enough then I could make an impact. It’s the same for the fitness industry and trying to make a name for yourself. There are a lot of smart, fit and talented people that move on to something else because the industry is tough and is a constant battle. We are educators and motivators, ones that inspire and continue to push our clients forward but there are definitely days where I need something to motivate me. You really have to love what you do and continue to better yourself through education, exploration to provide to best quality experience for your clients. It’s about helping others achieve what they might not have thought possible, or teach someone to integrate things within their habits that could change their life! That’s what makes it worth it at the end of the day. I would love to go out and change the world in a global way, but that has to start from a small and focused scale. It’s like with anything you do in life, just put in the work consistently and know the things you want in life. I don’t feel as if I’ve “made it” because I want to make as big of an impact as I can and I feel that is a never ending journey that one feels rewarded at every checkpoint. It’s like reaching a goal that you set for yourself and then being hungry for more. It’s not about greed but striving to be the best and most fulfilled version of yourself.
