Meet Lloyd Foster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lloyd Foster.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Chicago. I got my first guitar when I was about 18 and started writing songs. I didn’t think I was much of a singer, but when I finally had at least three songs down, I started doing open mics around the city. That’s when I realized music was something that I was really passionate about. I got such a great response after my first open mic, I couldn’t wait to go home and write more songs! I did small gigs and open mics around the city for a year before I moved to the west coast to finish college and pursue music further.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anyone pursuing a dream has a smooth road. While it may be easier for some, I think that anyone who challenges themselves creatively will always run into obstacles, whether personal or professional. A struggle for me and probably a lot of other creative artists is having to always prove yourself.

Finding a way to be relatable through music while retaining a bit of uniqueness is a struggle that even successful artists can encounter. I think that there is a part of all of us that is unique. It might change from day to day, but uniqueness sets us apart from what’s popular. So finding that balance is important, not only for mass appeal but for your own sanity.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I sing and write songs. I think, so far, I’m mostly proud of being able to sustain. I’m easily discouraged, but I think you learn your own strengths when something you are passionate about is put to the test. Because no matter how much talent you’ve got, perseverance is the thing that stands out in comparison. It’s a matter of being able to continue whatever level you’re on talent-wise.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is defined by my ability to connect with an audience. I want to make people feel. I think the most amazing gift an artist can possess is being able to sing their song and make you feel that it’s your own.
