Meet Liz Carey of Mascot Aesthetic in Newhall (Santa Clarita)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Carey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an Esthetician of many years (about 25) my love of skincare and all things beauty has led me down many different roads. After working in salons for years, I realized I was always trying to create a space that was different than the one I was working in. I was continually trying to create an experience for my clients that was unique. Opening up a shop that was a combination of services and retail seemed like the perfect way to combine my vision. Living in a suburban community, I always felt we lacked a certain flair for artisanal goods. It became my mission to be able to work with other small artists and vendors to create a space in our valley that inspires those that come through our doors. I also knew that if I was going to do this, Main St. was going to be the place. Newhall is the heart of our town, it has history and a soul. I feel honored to work alongside my fellow small businesses, in my opinion it’s some of the best food and shops in town! I love being able to create a unique space that’s different from others in our community, a place to feel good and support small.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Honestly, I feel that everything happened the way it was supposed to. From finding our shop space to creating the vibe. I will say that it continues to grow and change everyday as does my learning of being a small business owner. I still pinch myself when I look around our shop. I’m really grateful for all it’s become.

Mascot Aesthetic – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We call our shop a well-being boutique that specializes in skincare and beauty. We are all Esthetician’s however, we all have something we specialize in that sets us apart from one another. I myself am “the brow girl” you can catch me still waxing/tweezing brows however for the last four years Microblading has taken over my world. There’s four of us and collectively we do waxing, makeup, lashes, facials and more! We’re always keeping up with the latest beauty must haves and trying to put our own spin on things. It’s always been about the “experience “ as well as the service. It was my plan to have a space where you can go and feel good, relax, socialize or just getaway whether for 15 min or 2 hours. I’m proud of what we’re continuing to create.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Honestly, my success is still evolving, everyday I’m learning something new. Especially now during this pandemic- I’ve had to completely change my business model to being a retail store with only online sales. Success for me isn’t just the destination it’s how I’m continuing to get there. It’s being open to learning and understanding that with the highs will almost always come with lows. Being a business owner was not something I knew how to be prior to opening, I never had a business plan, I wasn’t a business major in school. On the contrary, I went to beauty school! Lol – Success so far has definitely come with a learning curve! Just before we had to shut our doors due to COVID, we had just celebrated our four years anniversary with a big party. It was amazing to have our community, neighbor shops, friends and family by our side to celebrate. If I had to define the feeling of success, I would have to say that was it!
