Today we’d like to introduce you to Livio Ramondelli.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been working professionally in the comics and illustration field since 2007. I’m a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and was beyond lucky to get hired by Jim Lee for my first job out of school, doing design work on a massive DC Comics video game project. From there, I began to make connections across the comics industry and began what would become about ten years ( and counting!) of work on the Transformers franchise. I’ve also provided storyboards for Universal Studios Japan and illustrated Star Trek and Firefly travel guides for Insight Editions, among other clients. I’m also fortunate enough to travel the world appearing at various comic-cons and meeting my amazing fellow geeks across the globe. I’m very thankful to have a life where I make a living doing what I love.
Please tell us about your art.
I really enjoy playing with the atmosphere in my work. I’m a huge Ridley Scott fan, and I love the sense of realism and believability he’s able to convey in anything he creates- from sci-fi to ancient historical settings. It’s that kind of aesthetic that I try to strive for in my work- to create a believable place and an environment that suggests a lot of unspoken stories.
I do my lineart in traditional pencil on paper, and my coloring is done digitally. I use a mobile studio pro tablet, which is exactly what it sounds like. My entire home office can be packed into a bag or taken on a plane if need be. It’s an amazing time for artists to have tools like this.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I’d say it’s just the sheer amount of content being produced. And much of it at very high levels of quality. Standing out and making a name for yourself can be challenging among a sea of always increasing content.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is updated almost daily on Instagram at LivioRamondelli. Both my published work, as well as my commissions. I am always taking commissions, so if you’d ever like something please just drop me a line at [email protected].
