Meet little luna

Today we’d like to introduce you to little luna.

Hi little luna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m little luna, and expressing that statement out loud has been a large part of my journey. I’ve sung since I can remember, but it has only been recently that I’ve allowed myself the time and space to not only make music but to give it to others to digest. I am born and raised from outside of Pittsburgh, PA, but have been traveling back & forth to Los Angeles since I was young, moving to Studio City full time at 18. little luna as a whole is my expression of searching for my truest self, connecting to it, and then creating from it. For me, the visuals are just as important as the sonics, so I’ve been working with Jade Ehlers to bring my visions to life. I joke that he is the other half of little luna because he truly has been by my side since years ago when I first expressed I wanted to sing and have my own project one day. He told me to let him know when I was ready to take the dive, and here we are. Jade introduced me to, and now co-manages me with David Lovett. The three of us are a powerhouse together, small but mighty. We released my first single “shift & go” in October which is about allowing yourself to change. With the single, we released a lyric video, music video, alternate version of the song – “shift & go: cinematic” and a music video for that as well. Making this project as a whole has changed my life forever. I love what I do and I’m loving the freer version of myself I’m stepping into. As I’ve talked to fans about this song, it’s interesting for me to reflect that although I made this song to encourage the listener to allow themselves to change, I was largely speaking to myself. little luna is about who you could be if you take the labels off who you’re “supposed” to be.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s funny you ask because actually it has been smooth! Most creative endeavors in my life have not been, but without being cheesy, I know I am supposed to be creating as little luna. I truly believe when you’re tapped into your truest self and operating from that space, doors will open as you put in the work and time. With any project nothing ever goes the exact way you think it will, but I enjoy the pivot! When I have to last-minute change an element or figure out how to make my vision work given the newest hiccup or bump in the road, I am excited by the challenge. I work two jobs to pay for everything I’m creating with little luna, so don’t get me wrong there are moments that I feel overwhelmed, but when I do I just take some time to ground back down through my mediation and yoga practice. Both mediation and yoga have been huge helpers in re-discovering my truest self.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of my most favorite things in the whole world is listening to music, which is why it’s been so fun for me to incorporate other areas of my life all into this one project. I started acting at the age of 13 and have a deep love for film scores and cinema. So for every single I release, there is a “cinematic” version of the song! I’ve also been teaching yoga for about six years now, so with every single I create a Yang-style Yoga Flow video to go with it, and for every cinematic version of the song, I create a Yin-style Yoga video to go accompany it. Living life on this planet, creating as little luna, is my biggest joy. As far as my lyrics go, I write poetry, so often my songs are inspired by a word or line in a poem of mine. I feel deeply blessed to get to tie together a lot of the elements that make me, me.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mom (hi, mom!) often talks about this invisible thread in each of our lives; when you are listening to your intuition, you’ll find yourself on a journey where one person you met years ago can connect to something happening in your present day life (because you were operating from your truest self). There are so many humans that have helped me get to where I am at right now, but often in ways one wouldn’t notice unless time is taken to re-trace the steps. Someone I want to highlight today is Dayyon Alexander, a dear friend and incredible songwriter. In 2013, I was heartbroken and at the same time Dayyon was going to help me learn how to play piano. When I played him what I had been working on, I sang my heart out, and right then and there he said “wait, I didn’t even know you could sing? let alone like that? you need to be making music”. A simple compliment lit the fire inside me that I had always wanted to burn. Right after that, I made my first demo with Dayyon and his producing partner Jeff Shum. I started daydreaming about what it would look like to release my own music one day.

In 2015, I was a model on a random photoshoot with my now creative director, Jade Ehlers, when something in my gut told me to play Jade the demo and I had made with Dayyon and Jeff. I told him I knew my name was little luna and that I wanted to make an EP someday. After playing the song he, responded similarly as Dayyon first had with “wait. I didn’t even know you could sing?” then after sitting in silence simply replied “when you’re ready to do this, let me know. I want to be your creative director and help you build this”. Hearing those words just made the fire burn brighter inside me until 2019 when I finally allowed myself to step into who I am as little luna and giving it 100%. I called Jade and said “remember that time like four years ago when I said my name is little luna and I want to make music one day? that day is now, and I’d love to pitch you my ideas to see if you’re still interested”. Loud silence as I paced profusely until Jade calmly replied “yeah, I’m in, I’ve been in since you played me that demo”. So here we are folks! As I continue to re-discover my truest self, this invisible thread keeps opening doors I once only dreamed of.
