Meet Liran Machlouf of Homeation in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liran Machlouf.

Liran, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was living in Israel when a buddy of mine (now my partner and our President) from the States called me up and tells me I have to move back. As he continued on I understood that this was something that I had to do. We had always talked about our love for automation and so I packed up my things and got a flight home. At first, things were slow, as we approached company after company explaining what we do and how we could help, there was a sense of uncertainty regarding home automation, this was around 2013 and so many of the large companies were still hesitant. It wasn’t until we started getting calls asking for development that I realized how we had grown into an actual company.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, as with any startup that is pushing through an emerging industry there will always be bumps along the way. For us, one of the largest setbacks was when a large client refused to pay on over an $180,000 in development work. This was a very hard hit for our little company and we had to take several steps back, something that we are just now getting over.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Homeation – what should we know?
We specialize in the design, development, and distribution of integration drivers (think apps, but for your home automation system). Our integration driver distribution is done via Homeation.com, the largest platform for third-party integration drivers for the high-end home automation industry.

We love working on innovative products such as Ecobee thermostats, Belkin WeMo, and FLIR systems. However, I am most proud of the ideas that come from my team such as our Text Home integration driver, which allows you to control your smart home from anywhere in the world via text message commands.

Our team has truly been what helps us shine compared to others. Whether it is our development capabilities or our customer support it is our belief that in order to grow we must simply be better.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Our attitude, growing up my mother always pushed the idea of if a door closes, open a window. And if the window closes open the back door, and so forth. I believe it is that little bit of Israeli chutzpah (audacity, if you will) that lets me believe in our abilities above others, even when it seems imposable and sometimes is.
