Meet Lino Martinez of Lino Martinez Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lino Martinez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a younger man, I became an apprentice to Mario Orozco Rivera (Mexican Muralist) in 1981, over the years I gained vast knowledge working alongside him in my Mexico City. I graduated in 1985 and continued to work with Mario Orozco until 1989.

However I migrated to the United States in 1990 and have since been a part of various printing studios like LTD Impressions unlimited, Mirage Editions, and currently, I am the Master Printer Cirrus Editions LTD and produce various projects alongside Francesco Siqueiros at El Nopal Press.

In one way or another, be it producing my own work or printing editions for other artists I have been working in art for over 35 years. I truly love what I do and because of it, I’ve had the privilege to work closely with artists like John Baldessari, Denis Hollingsworth, and even Mark Bradford.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not, English is my second language, one that I have yet to fully grasp. I have problems just communicating with people on a daily bases. This presents a huge challenge for me somedays, but I am working hard at learning every day.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lino Martinez Art story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a printmaker, through my printmaking oeuvre, I am challenge image destabilization, net aesthetics, and digital expression while defragmenting collage and blending multiple processes into each configuration, such as drawing, painting, lithography or watercolor.

So I make prints, but no two are alike. I seek to challenge the medium itself and push it forward.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think galleries are seeing a decline, and that museums are becoming more open to the art of entertainment, so the exhibitions will become even more complex.

I myself work closely with CuratorLove, a new type of art enterprise that allows me to be an artist first while taking care of the logistics of my practice. I think in the near future different models will emerge that will push the boundaries of the institution and I for one am excited to see this.
