Meet Lindsey Neville of Newport Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Neville.

Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Cappys Cafe has been a beloved staple in the community for over 43 years, serving as a home to locals, meting spot for celebrities, go-to for families and the morning pit stop for surfers. Renowned for its delicious, hearty breakfasts and inviting atmosphere, the cafe has become a go-to destination for all. Committed to giving back to the community, Cappys actively seeks opportunities to support local charities and fundraisers, making it not just a restaurant, but a cherished part of the neighborhood’s fabric.

I began my journey at Cappys when I was just 22 years old, a young woman fresh from Fresno, eager for a new beginning and determined to reinvent myself. I had moved to follow a boyfriend, believing he was my ticket out of the valley. Shortly after arriving, I noticed a “Hiring” sign on the door of Cappys. With hope in my heart, I interviewed with the owner and was thrilled to receive a job offer that very afternoon.

Starting at Cappys was both exciting and intimidating, as I was the youngest waitress on the team. I quickly fell in love with the cafe, enchanted by its culture and the dynamic team of trailblazing women who paved the way for an incredible work environment. Those days under the original ownership were filled with countless memorable stories that shaped my early experiences.

A few years later, the restaurant changed hands, and a wonderful man became the new owner. He bought the restaurant as a fun retirement project, but soon realized the vast commitment it entailed. In desperate need of a general manager, he offered me the position. Grateful yet feeling unprepared, I accepted a role as front-of-house supervisor, where I had the opportunity to lead training and manage schedules.

This is where my story takes an exciting turn! 😊 When I say Cappys changed my life, I truly mean it. On Halloween in 2014, I was sporting a rainbow wig, freshly out of a difficult engagement, when a tall, handsome surfer walked in with a regular customer I had come to know. That day marked the beginning of a beautiful journey—three years later, I became that handsome surfer’s wife!

Throughout my time at Cappys, I encountered significant personal challenges. Struggles with an abusive relationship, loss, and the common confusion of my twenties weighed heavily on me. I carried the traumas of my youth into adulthood without realizing how those experiences held me back from thriving and reaching my full potential. One day, I had an epiphany—I quite literally drew a map of my ideal life and never looked back. I began a healing journey through therapy, spirituality, and my job. Cappys became my therapeutic outlet—a safe space where I could find solace, even on tough days.

A pivotal moment in my life came with the sudden loss of my brother, which left me devastated. During that time, my coworkers, cherished customers, and now-husband became my lifeline, offering me a positive focus for my grief. Their support reminded me that I was never truly alone.

My husband and I married in 2017 and welcomed our son in 2018. While I was on maternity leave, the ownership of Cappys changed hands again. I was heartbroken to hear the news from the previous owner, even as he reassured me everything would be fine. He encouraged the new Campbell family to meet me before deciding on management because he believed I would be a valuable asset. Within two months of returning, I was offered a management role, sharing responsibilities as a General Manager—an incredible step forward in my career.

The pandemic brought new challenges, and I found myself unable to work during that time. However, it offered me the opportunity for reflection and focus on my family. When the restaurant reopened, I jumped back into my serving position while also exploring a newfound interest in real estate. During this uncertain market, Tim Campbell approached me with an exciting opportunity. He expressed interest in purchasing another restaurant and suggested that I join him full time to help run both establishments. Without hesitation, I jumped at the chance!

Embracing this new role as regional manager, I now oversee both Cappys Cafe and the newly acquired Plums Cafe. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that the challenges I faced and the lessons I’ve learned have proven to be far more valuable than any traditional education. I tell Tim that we are building a beloved breakfast empire, a restaurant that the community adores—a place where people line up for the opportunity to work.

Now, 15 years later, I stand proud with a beautiful marriage, lifelong friendships, and a happy, healthy son who looks forward to working in restaurants alongside his mama. I have a fulfilling career that excites me each day. While I may have faced dark seasons in my life, Cappys has always been a beacon of hope. Within its walls, I found warmth, genuine relationships, and a nurturing community that has supported my growth.

Very few people get the opportunity I’ve had in this industry. I followed my heart and believe that God had a plan for me when I walked into Cappys one December morning. I feel incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to learn and grow with the Campbells and everyone at Cappys.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I mentioned in the previous questions answer. I encountered many personal challenges, including loss of loved ones, navigation personally and career path as well as covid.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my role, I pride myself on being the go-to person for tasks that my boss might not want to handle or simply doesn’t know how to approach—it’s true, and I wear that as a badge of honor! Over the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with him, and he has mentored me to think like a business leader. I’ve studied his every move and decision, which has enabled me to anticipate what he might want or need without having to ask.

What truly sets me apart from others is my ability to build and nurture relationships—both personal and professional. I firmly believe that solid relationships are the foundation of success in every aspect of life. This philosophy was instilled in me by my mother, who was a Vice President in sales. She taught me the importance of cultivating a positive company culture, which I have made a priority throughout my career.

I’ve worked diligently to foster an enriched environment for our staff, and as a result, this positive culture translates directly into the exceptional service and experience we provide to our customers. You’ll often hear me refer to “The Cappys Way,” which encapsulates our commitment to teamwork, support, and a shared mission.

I’m incredibly proud of the relationships I’ve built within our team and the culture we’ve created together. When our staff feels valued and connected, it shines through in everything we do, ultimately enhancing the experiences of our guests.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
This is a challenging question for me to answer, as I have lost many memories from my childhood. However, when I take a moment to reflect, my thoughts often turn to my grandparents. I spent a lot of time with them growing up, and some of my fondest memories are of those moments together.

I remember sitting on the back patio with my grandfather, singing songs and enjoying ice cream. One song that stands out is “You Are My Sunshine.” He loved singing it to me, and it truly made me feel like I was his sunshine.

With my grandmother, we would lay in bed, laughing until we were in stitches. She had a delightful way of telling stories about my mother when she was young, captivating me with her entertaining narration. Those experiences with my grandparents have left a lasting impression on me, filling my heart with warmth and joy.
