Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Long.
Hi Lindsey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Lindsey Long Equine Photography is the fusion of three lifelong passions: horses, fashion, and photography. I was obsessed with horses from a very young age; we had a family horse during my childhood in Louisiana.
While I never imagined photography would be a career, I was an avid hobbyist and took photography classes in college, including an independent study on fashion photography.
When I moved to Los Angeles after college in 2005, I worked as a model and took the opportunity to learn from the fashion photographers I was lucky enough to collaborate with.
After a long break from riding, I purchased my first horse as an adult in 2014 and became part of the Southern California hunter-jumper community. I held a variety of jobs but on the side, dabbled with taking photographs of my horses and my barn mates. When the city locked down due to COVID-19 in early 2020, my other work was canceled and I was able to focus 100% on equine photography.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest challenge has been my own perceptions of what’s possible as an equine photographer; a job I never even knew existed! It is beyond my wildest dreams, and I wasn’t expecting the growth I experienced very quickly. Certainly, a great problem to have!
My advice to others considering something off-the-beaten-path is to believe in yourself and dream BIG. Your only limits are in your own mind.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I only photograph horses; my camera doesn’t come out of the bag unless a horse is involved. Within equine photography, I do three distinct things: (1) equine portraits, which are “formal” portraits featuring only the horse, (2) horse and rider portraits, focusing on the bond between horse and rider, and (3) equestrian sport photography – action shots of hunter-jumper competitions.
When I photograph competitions, I bring a team of equestrian sports photographers so we can cover every show ring and provide amazing photographs of every level of rider, from young children on their first ponies to professional Grand Prix riders.
For horse and rider sessions, I’m really proud of my client closet which consists of beautiful skirts and dresses for my clients to borrow. Some may think it’s counter-intuitive to dress up in a barn environment, it works because horses are such stunning creatures.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Most of my clients are Los Angeles area residents who have their own horses, but if you don’t have your own horse, I partner with several companies who provide horses for photo shoots. If you’ve ever dreamed of beautiful photographs with a beautiful horse, I can make that happen for you even if you’re not a horse owner!
