Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Friedman Guerrero.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While studying environmental studies at CU Boulder, I got involved with the team behind the Emmy winning and Oscar-nominated documentary CHASING ICE and found that film was the perfect medium to share my passion for the environment and connecting with others. From that point on, I fell in love with the power of visual storytelling.
In 2014 I took a big risk – I moved to Los Angeles with no job lined up, in search to learn more about storytelling. My mentor Fay Viola took me under her wing as a PA on commercial sets and eventually connected me with Orlando Bloom, who I worked with for years on some incredible projects.
Currently I have two independent films out of my production company in post-production – a narrative SOPHIE JONES and a documentary FASTING: THE HEALER WITHIN, that we will be submitting to film festivals this fall.
I fully believe with a passionate hustle, you can do whatever you set your mind to.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Filmmaking is hard! Going freelance and setting up my company last year was a massive challenge, but incredibly rewarding because it gave me the opportunity to look in the mirror and ask myself, what do I want, what is important, and know that I was going to be responsible for my own destiny.
On a personal level, my husband and I were used to making a certain income and we needed to embrace that for a while we needed to adjust our expenditures for me to take on this opportunity. It was a joint effort and I am so appreciative that I was able to invest in myself this way.
On a business level, fundraising for the films – getting people to believe in you and support your projects with investments is never-ending. So many hours curating the perfect emails or coffees, it can feel daunting, but I’m really humbled by this opportunity to share our projects and build a community around them.
The Sounding Board – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
the sounding board is an independent film production house. I support independent projects in all stages of development and in consultation. I am most proud that I’ve built this company with two films in post-production over the last year.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Can I name a few??
Screening CHASING ICE at the White House.
Saturating on congressional district in Ohio with CHASING ICE screenings, giving constituents the tools to support their Congressman to change his stance on climate change – it worked!
Being acknowledged for two Emmy Awards for the CHASING ICE & CHASING CORAL documentaries
Having the opportunity to live and work on film in London, Shanghai & Prague.
Producing my first feature film!
