Today we’d like to introduce you to Lina Cordero.
Lina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts in one of the happiest countries in the world: Costa Rica.
I was raised in a multicultural environment (Colombian/Costa Rican/French) by a single mother, my grandparents and my aunt (because… ahem… Latin families…) I lived in paradise for the first 17 years of my life until I moved to Los Angeles for College.
After studying Fine Arts and Graphic Design at the University of Southern California I landed a job at a television network where I became the Brand Manager and Head of Design. That’s where I fell in love with branding. After five years of working there, I had my daughter Lucia, and my world entirely shifted.
After a year of juggling a full-time job and maternity, I realized it wasn’t fulfilling me anymore. I wanted to work on projects that meant more to me and wanted to be able to spend time with my daughter.
That’s when I took a leap of faith, quit my job and decided to open my own company: Onlychild Design, a full-service design studio specializing in branding. It has been by far the scariest, most rewarding decision I’ve ever made!
Parallel to that, I have been working on Mondays Labs, a wellness company that focuses on making you feel better and happy at work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a road with very little sleep. Like every entrepreneur knows, building a company (or 2!) requires way too much effort, and when you add a two years old to the mix you get… well… a very tired mom.
Luckily, I absolutely love what I do (both in business and motherhood) so that gives me the strength to continue each day. I’ve been blessed with a great family, friends and business partners that have made what could’ve been a very bumpy road a bit more smooth.
Onlychild Design – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Onlychild is a design studio, we specialize in building brand identities but love to dig into other projects including web design, social media branding and event design.
I think what differentiates us the most from other design studios is not only the quality of our work but the way we treat our clients. We take care of every client as if they were the only child: always spoiled, never rotten. That’s our motto.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me means being able to live everyday doing what makes me happy, surrounded by the people I love, there’s no much science to it.
