Today we’d like to introduce you to Lin Sun.
Lin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Oh gosh. Ok, so I’ve always dreamt of being a theatrical actor. TV or big-screen drama. I got pregnant at 35 years old. Had my son at 36. After becoming a mom, I thought, “what could possibly be harder??” So I decided to try standup comedy. I’ve admired stand-up comedy my whole life. I never thought in a million years that I would have the guts or the skills to be a standup comic. But I went for it… and now here I am! I still have a long way to go!
Has it been a smooth road?
Standup comedy has been good to me since I’ve started a year ago. It took me 39 years to find my place in this world. I had no idea it would be comedy.
The struggles that I do face are being a single Mom and figuring out child care expenses, babysitters and balancing between a job, comedy and being a single mom. I do this alone. No help from the government, from my son’s dad or family. Fortunately for me, I do have exceptionally great friends and babysitters.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I just started a talk show on YouTube called “The Lin Sun Show” where I am inquisitive about people’s story. I love connecting and authentically getting to know people. The show just started so we are still in the process of finding our legs. But we are on our way!
I’m extremely proud of my breakthrough of “just going for it!”. I typically wait until everything is perfect before I do things, but luckily I found my producer/friend Joe Flanders who nudged me to start. Being a talk show host was another childhood dream of mine.
What sets me apart from others? Hah. That’s a hard question. I think everyone is unique. I have found my voice in being a raw smart ass single mom who also has a softer side. I found that being open made it easy for others to be wide open with me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Los Angeles! I think this is the perfect place to start in show business!
