Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Ramirez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Being from South Central LA has opened my eyes in many different ways. When your from SCLA, it gives you the ability to explore more than that area because you know there’s more things out there then just south-central. I could be in East LA and look at the mountains of San Bernardino or I could go to Malibu and look over the ocean. What I mean is that when you’re from south-central, you’re not stuck in one community you’re in Angeleno; you are the LA. Therefore colors, textures, landscapes, people inspire me to paint the way I do, plus being a diversity is just exceptional.
Has it been a smooth road?
Struggle did come around. If I didn’t have my Papi Miguel (rip) and my friends from college, I don’t think I would’ve been able to get my bachelor’s degree in painting. Waiting for the bus at 9pm in Manchester and Figueroa coming back from art school is no joke. Not having enough money for art supplies and figuring out how would I be able to do was very hard at a time. Having my grandpa (Miguel) with leukemia and trying to finish college was horrible experience. But on the other hand, I had his strength and the motivation of all my friends that went with me through that.
Please tell us more about your art.
Art is my life, cheesy as fuck but it’s my life! Lol (well after my son it is). My focus is oil on canvas; the sizes vary depending on what I am painting. I love painting in oil because they give me the ability to show more texture show more depth in the painting and gives me time which is what I need because I paint very thick. This year I started working on a notebook, that notebook sold then I started working on four notebooks those also sold. Now I am thankfully painting/drawing 10 to 20 notebooks and it has given me the ability to explore different ways of drawing illustrating painting and seeing what I’m more capable of doing on paper. There also notebook so with this situation that we’re in now it’s perfect to write your thoughts, recipes, drawings or anything you want.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As a mom, I hope I am able to give more to my son with what I love to do which is painting. Grow as a painter as a woman as a sister as a daughter and as a wife that I am. But I’m totally ready to do and to work hard and whatever it comes.
