Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily E.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started with two survivors; young teens in the 1970s who endured the nightmare that is the Khmer Rouge. Laying in the refugee camps, the “American Dream” was just that — a dream. Until one day, their prayers were answered. Leaving behind their family, homes and refugee camps, they were able to start anew in America and rebuild their lives.
Those two survivors are my parents.
Working two jobs with little to no sleep while going to school was their only option. Eventually, they saved enough to start their own business. Something they can finally call their own. My dad once worked a 40-hour shift — on the day of his wedding! He changed into his tuxedo at the shop before busting a mission to the ceremony.
A few days before I was born, the shop my parents had poured their blood, sweat and tears into had burned down in the middle of the LA Riot. My mom was in labor while my dad was at the shop. The police ordered him to leave the area because it was getting too dangerous. The last thing anyone wanted to do was put any more stress on my mom, so they were forced to stay mum on the riot and the condition of our business.
Once again they had to start from scratch; building the business from the ground up with a new baby. But what got them through was perseverance and the dream that their children would not have to suffer as they did.
This business is not only a part of the family. It is our family.
After college, I wanted to help out the family business and put my own spin: artsy donuts! Not only do I have a creative outlet but I also get to see how our donuts bring families together. Whether they come together to pick out a dozen in the shop or order donuts for special occasions, it all comes back full circle to what matters to us: family.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely learned a lot in terms of managing. Helping out the family business in the 21st century meant having to be the creative director, designer, social media manager, marketer, and all that on my own. There’s still a lot to work on but we’re getting through it together. I’m constantly inspired by my parents’ strength and there is no other quote that can better illustrate this than.
“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”- Bruce Lee
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fantastic Donuts – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
While we offer coffee, donuts and other pastries, we also specialize in character donuts! “Cute” animal donuts and themed donuts fit for any occasions. We’re especially proud of this because not only is it unique to our store but it also brings together families. We love seeing faces light up when they pick up their customized boxes. They’re fit for birthdays, baby showers, anniversaries, holidays, etc.
