Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Person Ryan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Leslie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Letter Perfect began our business 33 years ago in Montecito and then in December, we, along with the entire Santa Barbara community, experienced the worst wildfire in California history followed by devastating mudslides in January. Our store in Montecito was closed for two and a half weeks immediately following the mudslides. Many of our customers lost their homes and property. In February, we opened a new location in downtown Santa Barbara to have a safe place to continue our unique design work and serve our customers. Today, we serve customers at both stores as the community continues to rebuild from the tragedies of the past year.
Letter Perfect is more than a stationer, we are a meeting place of people that care to communicate. To that end, we produced cards and custom stationery reflecting our heritage and current story of recovery and hardship in a way that the community was able to identify. For instance, “First Responders are HOT!” pads, Fire (plus) Rain (plus) Mud is less than Love cards, and our Family History Diaries.
We created plantable Renewal and Re-Blossoming to invite a future of new beginnings.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Because of the most recent disasters, our Montecito store was under mandatory evacuation for over two weeks. We lost business during that time and had difficulty communicating with our clients, many of whom were also under mandatory evacuation or lost their homes altogether.
We as all of our area struggle to regain communication in a meaningful way given the severity of all of the Disaster.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are known for our creativity in our design and the investment we make in each client.
Clients, whether brides, party planners or individuals seeking stationery and invitations will work with one of our designers to create something that will reflect themselves. Our philosophy is to work with our client’s vision and make the graphics custom and singularly reflective of their dreams and desires.
What were you like growing up?
Mom put in in front of a blank piece of construction paper and asked me if I wanted to make a card for my cousin. Did I ever!
I received my degrees in business and fine art from Scripps College in Claremont, CA.
Later, as an excited bride-to-be, I visited a stationery store to design and order invitations for my wedding only to be met with coldness. The store clerk, without saying a word just dumped book after book of designs for me to flip through. I walked out and traveled to Los Angeles to order my invitations and realized that Santa Barbara needed a stationery store with selection AND service. Letter Perfect was founded.
