Meet Leon Townsend III of Corpen Real Estate in Altadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leon Townsend III.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Leon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story about how I got into real estate is a peculiar but interesting one to say the least. As a kid, I was always fascinated by mansion style homes and the possibility of owning multiple homes in multiple states as well as possibly other countries. The story about how real estate landed in my lap is a funny one. I was introduced to the formal practice of real estate my sophomore year of college when I was tasked with helping my college roommate study for his license exam.

He was on the older end of being a college sophomore and I was on the younger end so I thought there was an age requirement. When I graduated, the recession no one saw coming was on the horizon and I figured it’d be a bad time to enter the industry but I knew I was going to come back just didn’t know when. I did a lot of jobs that had a slight correlation with real estate but never a true interaction. When my grandma fell ill and before she eventually passed away, she told me that you were destined to do great things and achieve your dreams but the only way for you to do so is if you decide to not rely on the thoughts but the capabilities and talents of your own. I took that as my sign to live out my dreams of being in real estate and I’ve never looked back no matter how hard it’d get or what may occur with the industry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s never a smooth road when it comes to starting a business especially a business in real estate. I think some of my struggles have been different than others. A main struggle I had at the beginning was the fact that the first people I’d came into contact with in my original office were people of a different generation who were that to never really help others and focus on self. They were also ones who weren’t too efficient with the new wave of technology and focused on the same techniques. Another struggle I had was my office believed the only way to sustain a career in real estate was to not volunteer time learning your craft as well as serving your community. The main struggle I’d say I’ve experienced and it still happens today is the wave of people who do all the work it takes to become a real estate agent but are only around for a year or for one specific goal then think they can give advice to people who are in the process without realizing they’re giving them outdated or incorrect information.

Please tell us about Corpen Real Estate.
My business is a small brokerage that is split between San Francisco and Los Angeles. We’re a small firm that focuses mainly on helping people make educated decisions in regards to buying and selling all types of property ranging from commercial to residential to even land properties. What I’m most proud of being a part of Corpen is that we legitimately try to be at the cutting edge of helping people as well as addressing issues buyers could have. We also have real estate attorneys on staff and have created partnerships with firms that are focused on making the homeownership process for crucial community occupations possible. Some may view a small firm as a disadvantage but I also think it allows us to create unique relationships with companies that people have never heard of but will change the real estate industry rapidly and we can say we’re with them from the beginning.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was the support that my parents and grandma gave me. I know it may seem like a generic childhood memory but when you’re the oldest of six kids, it’s something you’ll never ever forget. No matter if it was a student of the month award, a spelling bee win, a track meet, a math field day, a graduation, a speech there was my mom at least at every single one or my mom and grandma. There was never an awards assembly, a football or basketball game or graduation she ever missed and you could never miss her or my family because they were always the loudest.
