Today we’d like to introduce you to Lekem Amsal.
Lekem, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am Ethiopian & was born in New York City. I moved to Tanzania at the age of three with my mother for her job. All my life I was always someone who expressed emotions & I realized my favorite outlet for that early on. & it was writing. Whether it was writing song lyrics, poems or my feelings down- I always felt better after I wrote something. When I got to college at LMU I created my YouTube channel called lekem Amsal which I do so many different things with. I do beauty, lifestyle & fashion videos & vlogs! I enjoyed blogging so much that I started blogging! I created my blog @lekemunpacks on Instagram & started sharing my emotions on there. I have taken the month of august off for my mental health as a break but I will be back to running the blog in September. The amazing part about freelancing & writing is that you can do it from anywhere at anytime. For example, I can asses how the blog has affected me & I can work accordingly. Just like I took the month off.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but smooth. The process if trying to figure out who to work with & who to trust both in the sense of business & lifestyle it can be difficult. I have worked with some people on my YouTube channel who turned out to have nothing but my best interest in mind & that was detrimental to my mental health. once I assessed who actually cared about me versus who didn’t, my job became a lot easier.
Lekemunpacks – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
On my youtube channel, I do things relating to fashion, Beaty & lifestyle. Since I am Ethiopian my niche on YouTube are Ethiopian videos of all kind. Whether it be mukbangs or learn Amharic with lekem, I’m you’re girl! I believe my niche sets me apart from everybody else because my viewers can see my content is entertainment but is mainly educational. It;’s for the betterment of myself & others (Ethiopian or not). My blog on the other hand is basically a diary that I share online. I share different experiences (both good & bad) in the hopes that other can relate as well. The momentum on my blog has been a little slower than my YouTube channel which is mainly because this generation prefers to watch not read (due to our attention span). MY hope for my blog is that it gains momentum & my plan is to create a “my story” portal so people can submit their stories to me on Instagram & it goes into the blog starting in January 2020!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I got monetized this summer on YouTube! I’ve had my channel for a year so to grow the way I did is such a blessing 🙂
