Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee and Sam Boxleitner.
Lee and Sam, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Given the fact that we grew up with four parents in the film industry, we spent a lot of time on sets as children. Movies were always a big deal in our family, so we started making movies of our own when we were kids. Since then, we haven’t stopped.
After attending film school (Lee) and music school (Sam) we found ourselves getting jobs as production assistants on set. We spent the next chunk of our lives exploring different avenues of production while forming a strong crew of talented people and producing our own short films on the side.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s less of a road and more like “The Log Jammer” at Magic Mountain. It’s a slow ride, and sometimes it takes forever to get to the top of the hill. All you can do is wait for the drop. More often than not, the drop you’re expecting isn’t quite as big as you’d hoped. But you celebrate it with a splash and a cheer, before having to slow down again, cause the others in front of you are all backed up. We haven’t had our “big drop” yet, but from what we’ve been told, it’s fast and it’s a lot of fun. Does that make any sense at all?
The Boxleitner Brothers – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from others?
We grew up hooked on ’80s horror movies. In a lot of ways, those movies inspired what we make today. I guess you could say we are known for our horror short films that you can currently find on our youtube channel. We’re proud of all of them, but “Downstairs” and “Die! Sitter! Die! : Rupert” are probably our best achievements to date. They both exposed us to the festival circuit, won awards and got us our representation. I think one thing that may set us apart from other horror channels is that, while we go for the throat when it comes to scares, we also find it hard to take ourselves too seriously. Levity isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to the horror genre. But then again, what the Hell do we know?
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Acquiring representation has been huge for us. It’s allowed us to take meetings with people that we would never be able to meet on our own. Both our agent and our manager have been incredibly nurturing and have helped mold us into better filmmakers. We are very lucky.
