Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Glouberman.
Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in LA and have been here ever since! I’ve always loved performing and creating stories, and am so grateful that I get to continue doing so as my profession. I did theatre in high school where I got to play incredible roles such as Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice (I am still dating my Mr. Bennett), Feste in Twelfth Night, and even some new characters in student-written works. I went on to study Theatre as well as Film & TV Production at the University of Southern California. During my four years at USC, I shifted my focus toward film/tv and began acting, producing, and directing short films and sketches. Since graduating, I have continued to study acting at various studios and have performed in theatre, short films, and sketch comedy skits. I work at a gym to pay the bill$ and I can’t do more than five push-ups for the life of me. I am part of an all-female sketch team called “The Matriarchy” comprised of myself and five of my best friends who I met at USC! We write, produce, and act in sketches that we (try) to release weekly. For the first time in my life, I am actually planning to leave LA for a few months to act in Atlanta Georgia.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, and things continue to change day by day. I am a planner by nature and have a need to know exactly what’s going to happen. I also struggle with anxiety and am too concerned about what other people will think of me. Over the last few years, I have had to let go of those feelings and become more adaptable to not always knowing everything. While it’s been difficult at times to give up that control, it’s also been incredibly freeing and exciting. Opportunities are always presenting themselves when I least expect them, and while it can be stressful to navigate new situations, it has always benefitted me in some way even if it doesn’t seem to at first. In terms of my anxiety, it’s still something I’m working through. I still worry about what people think of me and get nervous before every choice I make. But I’m realizing that it’s okay to be nervous about decisions, as long as I keep making them!
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
My background in production has been a huge help with acting. While at USC’s film school, I got to study directing, producing, cinematography, editing, sound, etc. and had internships in both casting and talent management. I became really interested in the casting process and started helping friends cast their productions as well as my own. It was so helpful for me to see exactly what did and didn’t work in the audition room, and it taught me a lot. I think the work that I’ve done within various aspects of production is what helps set me apart now that I’m on the other side of the camera.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This is tough to answer because there are so many people who have been supporting and advocating for me. My mom has come to every one of my shows, my friends and siblings share all of my sketches with their friends, my grandparents are always a short phone call away, and my boyfriend sits front row on my emotional roller coaster. But I’d say my greatest mentor has been my Aunt – Esther Shapiro. Esther was the creator, writer, and producer of Dynasty (1981), and continues to executive produce the current reboot – now on the CW. She was the first female executive on a major television network, and her strength, drive, and ambition is something that has always inspired me. Since I decided to be an actress, she has been in my corner guiding me and giving me some of the best advice.
