Meet Lauryn Evarts Bosstick of The Skinny Confidential in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauryn Evarts Bosstick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Skinny Confidential started nine years ago when I was attending San Diego State University full time, bartending & teaching Pure Barre & Pilates. I rushed a sorority & dropped out five seconds later when I saw what they were charging. They were charging money for women to be part of a community, & I realized there was an opportunity to do this same concept on the internet but do it without the cattiness or the money.

I had this idea of connecting like-minded women, but taking it a step further & including women from all over the world. I saw a lot of white space- at the time blogging was nowhere near what it is today. I saw the vision of creating something very meaningful over time, that eventually could become multi-faceted. Whether that meant product, meet-ups, a podcast, or a TV show, I saw that there was a lot of space to build a brand for female millennials & take it a step further to make it a resource.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely not a smooth road running a business. I wouldn’t ever use the word smooth. Building a business is putting fires out every single day. I’ve had everything from a partnership that didn’t go as planned, to writing a blog post that people got mad at, to learning to deal with employees, to backend problems like the site crashing. But you pivot & learn from each one. I’ve learned more running my own business & actually experiencing it than I did in all four years of school.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Skinny Confidential is a blog, podcast, book & YouTube channel. My specialty is being a resource for millennial women to come & discover everything from the best organic tampons to the benefits of a salt lamp to learning about facial massage to having access to experts in each field (I’m a huge collaborator- I love bringing experts on my platform).

I’m most proud of the fact that I can wake up & create my own future. I’m proud of being featured in Gary Vee’s new book too. After reading his Crush It! 9 years ago, & using a lot of his advice to build my business, it was really cool to be featured in his new book Crushing It! I’m proud of writing my second book right now too…. & I’m SO PROUD of the community I’ve built. The Skinny Confidential wouldn’t be where it is without the amazing community.

The Skinny Confidential platforms are different from others because I’m very much unapologetically myself in a way that readers feel like they’re at happy hour with me on every single platform. I have no problem talking about subjects that other bloggers might consider taboo. The platforms aren’t just about me & what I’m doing- it’s about bringing other people on to showcase a lot of different voices, opinions, & tips & tricks.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Ya, LA is an awesome place for an influencer to start out. The light is right here, which is very, very important. I went to London this winter & it was almost impossible to get content because it was so dark. We have the privilege of tons of sunlight here.

There are a lot of colorful walls here so if you have a strict aesthetic for your brand, you can always find something that fits with it. There are also lots of businesses like Alfred’s Coffee, Gracias Madre, & The Butcher’s Daughter that have opened up in the hopes of having people create content at their establishments.

Launch fast & adjust accordingly- using your city as an excuse to not launch a business is just that- an excuse. Figure it out & if you’re in LA, there are multiple opportunities & ways to get yourself out there.
