Meet Laurie Parres of Speeches Delivered in West Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Parres.

Laurie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From age twelve I wanted work in network television. At the time, universities didn’t really have TV programs, so I majored in telecommunication at Michigan State because it had the word “tele” in it. I learned how sitcoms were transmitted into your TV. My commencement address earned a standing ovation and, walking back up the aisle through the crowd, I felt like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars” throne room scene. Fast-forward thru 20 years of writing TV and I realized I could help other people feel like that, too. So I founded Speeches Delivered to bring the skills and talents of sitcom writers to private clients.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s funny how sometimes amazing clients just fall out of the sky while others present greater challenges. I asked one mother-of-the-groom if she wanted to say anything nice about the bride? The mom snapped, “Just tell me what to say and I’ll say it!” We did and she did.

Speeches Delivered – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m really proud we offer a rare ability — sitcom writing — that helps add spark to people’s special occasions and projects. It’s a specific skill that covers a wide range of client needs. Because we’ve written dialogue for all sorts of characters, we can capture the client’s voice so they sound like themselves… plus. We’re adept at taking feedback and incorporating it quickly. We can spot the story, the idea, the winning element in any project and weave the various elements into something that really lands.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Professionally, success is pleasing the client. Personally, it’s living in a way that creates the life I want.
