Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Crow.
Lauren Crow (they/them) is a bay area born/ Los Angeles based photographer and model who’s work explores their own and their subjects relationships to intimacy, body image, queerness, sexuality and sensuality. Stylistically influenced by artists like Nan Goldin and pornography of the 70’s, their photography invites the viewer to question preconceived ideas of art and beauty.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely had a lot of ups and downs getting to the point I’m at today. I have been very open about my struggles with mental health, body image and identity. For a long time those things were criticized and demonized by myself and others and it took me to some dark places. I traveled a lot, bouncing from place to place trying to find myself, but I’ve been back in California for a little over a year (after three years in Portland, Oregon) and feels like the dust is starting to settle and I’m really coming into my power.
Please tell us about Lauren Crow Photo.
In the past, I was mostly known for my cinematic self-portraits, series about women’s pleasure in popular media and exploring intimacy in all its shapes and forms. My latest series Lascivious has been an exploration of sensuality and sexuality of my generation.
When folks hire me, it is mostly for boudoir style intimate portraits of themselves to tap into their sensuality. My work is colorful, soft, bright and fun!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorites is the road trips my family would take from the bay area to Los Angeles to visit my grandma and grandpa. My sister and I would each get to pick three VHS tapes and my parents would strap our tiny portable tv on top of the cooler and we got to watch movies on our way there.
