Meet Laura Schein

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Laura Schein. Laura was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Jessica Redish.

Laura, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
I got my start, like Jessica, in the suburbs of Chicago, IL at Apple Tree Theatre. I owe it all to the late, great director Eileen Boevers for inviting me to audition for her professional production of “The Secret Garden” after seeing my work as the comedically villainous Princess Pimple at Summer OnStage day camp. I got the part, and from there I was hooked. I started booking TV/Film and commercials/VO (got a lotta 90’s Chicago street cred for a commercial with a Bulls player) and played The Little Girl in the first national tour of “Ragtime.” I got a Theatre degree at Northwestern University and decided to move to Los Angeles after graduating. In 2014, after years of working on new musicals, I started co-writing the musical “Emojiland.” We premiered off-Broadway in 2020, making a big splash before getting shut down by Covid. But the show lives on, and I’m really proud of it. I’m now living in LA, acting in various Theatre/TV/Film projects, writing new musicals and songs for Disney and other studios as one half of songwriting team Zeadman & Schein, and feeling lucky to collaborate with talented friends like Jessica Redish 🙂

Alright, so we’d love to learn more about your acting career. What should we know?
I love acting because it’s always an adventure, a chance to explore new paths and tell new stories. I’ll always be an actor at heart because I can’t help but play, with or without a stage. My theatrical roots are strongly planted in the Windy City, and I got to play some incredible roles in my time there. But I also love acting for the camera, and the process of making a movie with a group of talented artists, which really always feels like a miracle when you finally watch it all come together. I recently guest starred on FOX’s “911: Lone Star” and starred in Jessica Redish’s short musical film “Exit, Pursued By A Bear.” I can also be seen acting opposite a real grizzly bear in the upcoming indie feature “Grizzly Night.” 🐻

So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Jessica Redish and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Jessica.
Jessica and I grew up together in Highland Park, IL and have collaborated on many musical projects over the years. Most recently she cast me as the lead in her musical short film “Exit, Pursued By A Bear,” which was my first experience working opposite a bear. Loved every minute of it. Jessica is an actor’s director. She knows inherently what you need and supports you in helping to find it within yourself. Her comedic instincts run deep, and I always feel like we’re on the same page when it comes to navigating the storytelling balance of humor and heart. Jessica is like a sister to me, and collaborating together is a true gift. Can’t wait for more!
