Meet Laura Roberts of Axis Aesthetic in Eagle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Roberts.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So I’m not actually from LA. I’m from the Midwest, Michigan, to be exact. I went to cosmetology school and worked there for a little bit but hated it and decided to leave. I moved to California when I was 23. I literally sold every I owned in a garage sale and hopped on a plane.

I moved in with my sister, who was living in OC at the time. I got my first job at a tattoo shop in Orange as the “front desk girl” but I basically did everything. Little did I know this job would provide me with so much experience in the future. Also during this time, I got a job with Anastasia Beverly Hills at Nordstrom and dove head first into the brow industry. This was back in 2012 before Instagram was at the capacity it is now, so the company was a lot smaller. I remember my boss telling me there was only like 70 employees company-wide. I learned so much during my couple of years there. I even had the chance to work with Anastasia herself before she stopped doing events. She gave me a couple of compliments that boosted my confidence tremendously. However, I decided to take a little break because I had a baby! (My baby is almost five now!) After about six months, I decided to go back to work and got a job with Wax LA. A waxing boutique with three locations at the time in West Hollywood, Silver Lake and Santa Monica. It was perfect at the time but after a couple of years, I found myself wanting more so I decided to take a microblading course. I’ve been nonstop busy doing brows since. I only microbladed there for about six months before deciding to rent my own room in DTLA.

But after about a year there I found myself out-growing my little room and the demand was out-growing me, I needed help. And then an angel (my business partner @labitchnbrows) sent me a DM on Instagram. We met up and after a few meeting decided we wanted to open a business together. So one day after yoga class, I decided to walk a different way to my car and passed a beautiful empty storefront. I called immediately and sighing a week or two I think we signed the lease. It’s been a long crazy journey but we have our OWN beautiful business. Two women. I’m so proud of us. We practically grew up with nothing and we’ve both worked so hard and finally have something to show for it. We recently added a couple more girls to the team and it’s so inspiring to be around so many positive and creative women. It’s a dream. And we’re living it every day. I’m forever grateful.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When is anything ever a smooth road? Struggles, of course, there are struggle. Overworking and over exhausting myself is my number one! I’m barely learning that I’m not a machine and that I’m a human just like everyone else. I need to take breaks. We all do. Especially because I’m a mother. And making time for family is the most important. I definitely fear that my daughter will grow up remembering that I was at work all the time so right now I’m trying to change that. I’m trying to figure out how to work smarter and not harder. And how to balance it all.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending literally the entire summers camping. Before I moved to Michigan, I actually lived just outside of Portland, Oregon, until I was 10. In the summers, when school was out, my mom would take us up to the mountains where we would camp for weeks! Only going into town for groceries and things. I think it made me super independent and a survivor for sure.
