Meet Laura Furo of Fusion in Saratoga Springs, NY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Furo.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I went to college for marketing/management. Worked as a retail store manager for years and the company went bankrupt. I decided at 29 years old to go to cosmetology school. My first intention was to study skin and makeup. After 2 days in school – I realized my real passion was hair. I studied everything I could and eventually became a master colorist. With a big following – I opened my own full-service salon 14 years ago. It has been a long hard journey that I wouldn’t change for the world. We are a full-service salon – offering hair, skin, waxing and two major cosmetic lines – Smashbox and Kevyn Aucoin.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No – it hasn’t been smooth. The learning curve is a BIG one. Just all the beauty regulations, training all new employees in color – most think they already know everything – there was always a struggle. The amount of employee turn over was shocking – not a lot of loyalty in this industry. I went through a divorce and had to put my mother in a nursing home at the same time. The salon is the only thing that kept me sane.
We have had to reinvent ourselves along the way. This is an ever-changing industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fusion, The Salon – what should we know?
We specialize in hair color – corrective, natural highlights and root colors that are so natural – no one will no you color your hair. I am most proud of our training program. I take beauty school students and turn them into master colorists within a few years. We are also known for our professional cosmetic lines. It is very hard to get these brands into a small independent salon. Our make up artists are amazing. We train on a constant basis – hair, skin and makeup. We do amazing hair in a very relaxed environment. We are very affordable for what our skill level is. We are a one-stop shop for all of our clients. They know we have researched and tried all of our products before bringing them into the salon.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I think that Leanne deserves a great deal of credit. She makes my job much easier and is always a positive team member. She handles most of the front desk and social media. She is great at training all new staff on policies and procedures. She is up to date on all current products and trends.
